DESIGN NAME: Ce Qui Est
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Handbag
INSPIRATION: The inspiration for this design comes from the thought of solidarity. Solidarity is a way of protection where one protects the other. If you support others, others will support you. It´s a way of unity, of oneness, of the whole which is total connection.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: It´s an original in shape handbag. It has no zipper and yet remains totally closed so you can keep all your personal stuff in. Made of the finest leather, it has a compact shape, organic and feminine. It has two covers which can be lifted and allow you to open the bag. It´s a very innovative shape, as well as keeping discretion and elegance for women.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: This is a casual handbag which you can carry on your shoulder or on your forearm, or hold it with your hands as a briefcase. It can be opened on the sides, lifting up the two cover caps that are on the top part. It is very safe because the bag can´t remain open, it comes to a closed position once you have taken what ever from the inside. And it has two invisible magnets which keep the covers on its right place so the handbag shape never gets deformed. The inside is lined with leather also, so it gives it a very delicate and luxurious touch. It has 4 interior pockets to place the mobile, pens, papers, visit cards, make up, lipstick, tissue paper, anything a woman may need. It is quite rigid and solid, so you can even use it as a decorative item, due to its original shape, almost like a sculpture.
It can be made on request, choosing the colors you like, or making it monochrome.
The way that it´s made and the fine materials, makes it a very high quality handbag, but also to be treated with love and care. The leather can get damaged easily, but if you take good care of it, it´s a very long lasting object, an all life companion that can live generation after generation, like a treasure or a jewel that can be inherited.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in April 2014, when I decided to make good quality luxury handmade handbags. I started by thinking about the concept which I could be identified with. I designed many many handbags, trying to find the thanslation of all the thoughts that I was having into shape. I also studied all about leather and handbag craftwork. I stayed in Ubrique which is a well known place for leather work, for its long time tradition and knowledge. So at the end of July I contacted this factory called Gino Vitorio, where they are highly especialized in luxury handbags. We agreed on developing my design together during August. It took us 3 weeks to arrive to the final product, after may testing and samples. During september I´ve been taking pictures of it and exploring on the proper communication of the product, which I am still working on, and I am sending the first images if it. So in conclusion, I can say that the project duration has been 6 months so far, because I am still working on it.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: This is two sides - type of research. In one hand, it is about researching within yourself to find what you really are. It´s a research on you inner thoughts, your consciousness, your desires. It has been a research of how do I see life, the world that is surrounding myself. It´s surrendering to the existence and letting it flow through me, like a hollow bamboo. A means of finding the shapes and details to compose the piece. On the other side, there are the materials and the manufacturing. That more material research. How the materials work and mix together, what are the effects on the sight of it. How do they react and how do they match.
In terms of methodology, firstly, you have to understand the different lifestyles which form the world that we see. The different type of persons as they express and live as how they define themselves, in order to be part of an imagery which they consider the best. After that, you see how it is structured in society, in the different status, or social classes. Then, you find yourself. You locate yourself at a defined place in there. And you see yourself, as someone who has values, which mark your work and aesthetics. You put everything together and there it comes. “The existence allows it to happen”.
Data collection and research tools used are basically books and reading and viewing images. Making many many collages, photoshop, illustrator, hand drawing, going to shops to find the best leathers and metals, searching for suppliers and factories, learning the leather´s craftsmanship, dealing with all of it, everyday, bit by bit.
Many previous experiments were done before the final one. Testing materials, the rigidity, the closures, the volume, the comfortability, and the obsession to find the right proportions.
Results. All this work turned out to be a “language”, a singular and particular language which gives identity to the brand COZARLLADO. For what? To be able to communicate the message which the creator of the brand wants to transmit to the world. As an artwork, it is expressing what she is feeling and thinking about the world that she is living with and she uses he creative capacity to give something back to it, her response to all the inputs the world generates to her.
Insight and impacts. After all this work, I feel I have grown up. I have understood many things, I have become more comprehensive and tolerant because I can see how we all are part of the whole, of the totality. There is a perfect order within us. We all are necessary and we all are good and bad at the same time. The most important thing for living is to be aware of yourself. To feel responsible of yourself, of your choices in life, because that is our biggest power. We choose all the time, we make choices and most of the people do not realize the choices they make. They think that there is no other option most of the times, and they blame others.
The creative process must be a means to know better oneself, and the better you know yourself, the more creative you are. It is a true creativity, more divine, which gives pleasure to others because it approaches them to divinity. And that fact, makes everyone feel at least a little bit of the peace that can be found within ourselves.
CHALLENGE: One of the hardest parts of this design activity was to find the right materials and the right manufacturers who were willing to work with me and make my ideas come true. It was summer and there were many people on holidays, as well as many suppliers we closed. Also budget has been an obstacle, because the materials and manufacturers are quite expensive.
In terms of design and creation, it´s been a challenge to create a new shape of handbag, a new way of closing and opening a handbag, that still could be useful and comfortable. But to me, the biggest challenge comes in finding the way to communicate my product; to reach the right consumers who understand and value what I offer. The ones who appreciate what I do and believe it´s worth it.
