DESIGN NAME: Stone
PRIMARY FUNCTION: NFC Reader
INSPIRATION: Public hospitals in Chiapas counts with public clinics which role plays a relevant option for people with low income and therefore are in need of health care services, hence a opportuniy was spotted to improve the existing NFC devices, for providing a better design solution with the objective of making it more humane for the everyday life, specially for the medical staff whose main concern is to treat with quality and efficient the most number of patients during day and meet existing demand.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The lack of good products and services is something of the everyday for local people. There is a lot of work to do for creating opportunities on the road and give something back, by making use of design, focus on an user center approach and taking into consideration essential aspects like portability, aesthetics, context, and its commercial values. Stone was designed as an electronic device that makes use of NFC technology for a more efficient administration of data in hospitals.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Stone is a device that makes use of NFC technology which enables the exchange of data between devices through a communication technology for short-range high frequency, when the user use a previously coded card, where is stored all his information regards his medical history, in order to be processed and updated continuously during medical consultations. This maximizes the data management and streamlines patient care.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in July 2014 and finished in November 2014
FITS BEST INTO CATEGORY: Digital and Electronic Device Design

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The production was custom made thanks to the use of modern 3d printing technologies, which benefits in terms of cost, production speed and quantity, empowering the project on giving a design that couldn`t be done within this logic in the past, opening a chance to deliver good design for less privilege people. All prototypes (60 in total) were printed in ABS plastic.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: "Stone" general dimensions 105mm x 100mm x 20mm
TAGS: product design, industrial design, medical device , electronic device, healthcare, doctor, health, administration, nfc
RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The research did to develop Stone was focus in the people that frequent on daily basis the public hospitals in Chiapas, Mexico. The kick-off started with an analysis of specific information provided by the client, after that the project continued with a brainstorming and the definition of some personas to envision with clarity design proposals. After considering specific ideas, 3d printing models were printed to test ergonomy, size and function.
CHALLENGE: Then main challenge during the development of Stone was to achieve a unique product identity for the medical industry, while managing the overall picture involved in the design such as the proper integration of electronic engineering, the consideration of 3d printing production, but also having in mind the possibility of making use of plastic injection for further implementations, as well as controlling the logistics of assembly and shipping.
