DESIGN NAME: Bend
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Chair
INSPIRATION: The Bend project can be summarized in one sentence: “A simple concept. A complex challenge.” It all started with an ordinary sheet of paper… and through variations and manipulations inspired from the origami technique, a art of folding paper into a shape representing an object, we understood that using the same concept we could create a unique chair with slight construction and sleek lines.
After an unquantifiable amount of testing and prototypes, the real challenge of the project was to turn the concept into an true industrial product through a complex manufacturing processes.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Made from only two pinched metal sheets, the seat and the back rest become one single unit after many bending steps which allow to build the shape and the structure of the chair in the same time. Even Bend is made by only a thin metal sheet of 1.5mm thickness the shape based in a complex combination of triangles faces guarantee the straightness of the product, In the same time every edge is double bended to reinforce potential weak parts like the legs. This uniqueness creates a looks of unfolded origami, not from a sheet of paper, but of steel that comes in a variety of bright colours.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: At the first sight bend is unique for its slight lines, but when the customer seat on it he will feel the same experience to seat on a common strong chair made in solid wood for example. Other details like the pinched 3d logo on the handle or the holes in every corner bring more industrial feeling to the product.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in November 2012 in Hangzhou and finished in March 2014 in Hangzhou, and was exhibited in CIFF in Guangzhou in March 2014, in Salone del Mobile in April 2014 and in Shanghai Furniture Exhibition in September 2014.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Bend combine handmade steps and high technology process, in fact it takes 52 steps to make an Grado Bend chair. At each step along the way, the two laser cutted metal sheets are bended and folded to give strength and three-dimensional to the product, then the pieces are put together and subsequently the chair is ground to smooth out the welds and create a seamless look. Bend chair is made entirely in metal. Creating furnitures from one single material has the environmental advantages of saving transportation between different production sites and simplifying the recycling of materials.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Chair made in steel and feet in nylon. With 480mm x Depth 520mm x Height790mm. Weight 6.9Kg. Finished in electrostatic powder coating with hummer optical surface. Available in five colours and a optional removable cushion.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Every product is made by adding or subtracting material from a solid, or assembling different components together. Bend is made buy a surface that become tridimensional without add other materials or parts.
CHALLENGE: In the first step was hard found a similar product in the market which can teach us how to produce a chair totally made in steel. The second most difficult work was understand how to cut the metal sheet with laser to have a efficient result in using material and less waste parts. Then follow the schedule of the folding steps, each bending has to be made in the right time before or after an other one and can not be in an other way. The last and most hard part of the work was ensure the straightness of the chair with the right welding system and a beam underneath the seat.
