DESIGN NAME: Vacs
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Assistive Geriatric Device
INSPIRATION: Hypertension is one of the most prevalent chronic diseases in Mexico. The 26.6% of the population aged 20 to 69 years suffers it, and nearly 60% of affected individuals are unaware of their disease due to the lack of health care preventive culture. Heart Disease is one of the leading causes of death, factors such as self-medication and poor eating habits prevent creating a National Health Strategy.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Old age is a stage of life in which people is most vulnerable and not always accompanied by someone during an emergency, therefore do not receive timely attention, which means saving lives. Vacs is a concept real-time heart pulse monitoring device linked to a service platform, providing immediate emergency response if it is necessary, offering security and well-being for the user and his beloved ones. Vacs pursuits a healthcare preventive culture in the user’s habits in a non-disruptive way.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Vacs is a mobile device that integrates a photodiode sensor that measures blood flow that allows the continuous monitoring of the heart rate, this information is linked to a software platform that validates and categorizes events, generating a warning communication if it is necessary, providing timely medical assistance. Vacs integrates an internal memory that allows to create a medical history of the patient, which is constantly updated in order to provide him a better treatment.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project strated in November 2012 in Mexico City and finished in July 2013 in Mexico City
FITS BEST INTO CATEGORY: Medical Devices and Medical Equipment Design

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: 3D printed parts (FDM) and foam dummies in the early stage of the concept development were built for tests and ergonomics.
The Alpha Protype was printed in ABS plastic.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Product Dimensions 150mm x 85 mm x 55mm.
Vacs integrates a PCB with the following features:
Bluetooth for data transmission between devices.
32 GB Micro USB Memory for data storage.
FPGA Cyclone 3 that works as a heart pulse monitor.
Accelerometer that detects falls.
Photodiode Sensor that measures blood flow.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Matersys is a Mexican company focused on providing solutions in the area of information technologies, with the support of Diablo Design decided to work together to implement and develop technologies that will contribute to improve the health area, which seeks to benefit the most vulnerable people. Official standards in health care were used as guidelines for setting the product design requirements.
CHALLENGE: The assignment was to create a wearable device that integrates the current technology, which will provide the senior care remotely. The photodiode sensor was the most challenging factor during the project, it was necessary to secure it to the left wrist of the user without obstructing or intervene in the natural movement of the human body. Mockups were used for ergonomic tests. In mid-term future, it will be pursued to miniaturize technology in order to improve the device performance.
