DESIGN NAME:
Fabula the Organic Pencil

PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Organic Pencil

INSPIRATION:
There are approximately 82 000 trees cut each year, to meet the annual demand of about 14 billion pencils. Animal habitats of thousands of species are violated and too many trees are cut. The negative ecological impact that pencil factories make, not just by cutting trees, but also by using harmful chemicals in pencil lead production are not to be taken for granted. Using organic waste materials and giving a pencil an additional purpose a positive change for the environment can be done.

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
Pencil made from 100% organic waste material. The pencil becomes a plant fertilizer. Seeds are incorporated into top. After the pencil is used to the unusable length, the top with the seeds is dissolved in water and planted along with the pencil waste organic material which becomes the fertilizer for the young plant. An average of cca 30 kg of organic waste material can be collected from one local craftsmen monthly, which is enough for about 5000 pencils.

OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
This completely organic pencil becomes a fertilizer for the plants. You save the sharpening waste in an eco pouch made out of organic cotton. After the pencil is used, its top is dissolved in water overnight and planted in the soil mixed with sharpening waste in recommended ratios. Plants correspond well with the organic pencil mixture and are stimulated to grow better and faster. The packaging of the pencil is send back as an eco letter containing the users eco/animal loving story.

PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:
The project started in June 2013 in Varazdin, Croatia. The project is the winner of My Green Zone competition of Zagrebacka bank (Zagreb/Croatia) 2015. The project is in final stage but still developing and incorporating new ideas. The web page is soon to be published. The project involves other corresponding products that are also in developing stages.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY:
Pencil is made from recycled waste organic materials. The materials are collected from local craftsmen and further processed to be used as the body of the pencil. The adhesive is also completely organic. The colors used are eco-friendly and usually used in beekeeping. The pencil lead is also handmade to avoid using harmful chemicals. The packaging is made of recycled paper and used to promote further eco actions.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
After choosing the materials, many agricultural and chemical testing was done. Fabula pencil contains 19.25mg potassium and 10.03mg phosphorus which represent sufficient needs for fertilizing a plant in 100g poorly enriched soil. Phosphorus builds the plant and potassium stimulates plant enzymes and protects against drought. The adhesive used needed to be also completely organic so it won't interfere with or ruin the seeds, and further along the plant that will grow. Experiments took over a year.

CHALLENGE:
Since the pencil is made completely out of organic materials, it was a challenge to make it durable and avoid fungal development. The hardness of the pencil and the pencil lead was very important to accomplish. The materials mixture needed to be easily maneuvered and quickly-hardening. The right ratios of materials used were the key to make a good fertilizer for the plants that will be planted from the seeds placed in the pencil top. The pH value of the mixture needed to be adjusted rightly.
