DESIGN NAME: Harrogate - The Diamond Bottle
PRIMARY FUNCTION: PET Bottle
INSPIRATION: Inspired by the classic architecture of Harrogate, the bottle has been designed to be memorable with premium appeal. The bottle’s diamonds disperse light to create an eye-catching, sparkling effect; guaranteeing stand out. The Diamond is a symbol of luxury and high quality, the same characteristics the brand Harrogate stands for. The clean, understated artwork and typography on the label supports the high class appeal of the overall product.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: This striking design has been implemented across the Harrogate Spring family. The objective was to create a distinctive range of bottles with premium appeal, to complement Harrogate’s classic branding. The bottle is functional, yet instantly recognizable. The diamond design creates an attractive cut-glass effect, whilst the rigid lattice provides exceptional strength as well as beauty. Harrogate’s iconic palette of black, white & silver, combines typography from Harrogate’s elegant heyday with subtle Far Eastern background patterns, inspired by the town's illustrious past.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: By proposing a dedicated grip area it is possible to offer the consumer improved handling for drinking and pouring. By distributing the material in a special way, we can stabilize this grip area more than the rest of the bottle. The combination of design and advanced technology ensure excellent stability for the most efficient amount of material used. The diamond cabling creates a lattice which enhances the strength and top-loading ability. The lattice also helps the ‘rebound’ of the bottle, creating a durable bottle which is resistant to ‘dimpling’ and dents.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: Project started in September 2013 in Neutraubling, Germany and the last of 14 bottles was finalized in February 2014. The installation of the complete Line at Harrogate, UK, ended May 2014. Following a commissioning phase, production started of the new bottle family.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The Harrogate Spring bottle is made of PET. The bottle is blown, filled and labeled in the Krones ErgoBloc, which is state-of-the art machinery within its class. The output is up to 36,000 bottles per hour. Using this machine and utilizing the new bottle design, Harrogate is able to produce efficiently and sustainably.
In addition, the ergonomics of the bottle (e.g. opening and pouring) have been optimized by implementing special grip features. This hugely effective design coupled with advanced bottling technology produces a ’right-weighted’ bottle. A light-weight bottle, whose stability and handling remains uncompromised.

CHALLENGE: After the decision to work further on the diamond design elements, the Krones team had to solve the multiple challenges of a modern high speed beverage line. The bottles had to be lighter (for environmental reasons), but at the same time, there is a need for a premium appearance and stable handling. Having the diamond structure on the bottle and inner pressure of the CO2 (natural content of spring water) was the second challenge. The pressure tries to soften all sharp edges and lines. By using special geometrics, the diamond structure remains at even high content of CO2 very present and still visible.
