| DESIGN NAME: Boomerang PRIMARY FUNCTION: Telephone INSPIRATION: Inspired by the simple form of the Australian throwing tool, the designer created this masterpiece. The elegant Boomerang by iDECT possesses an ultra-slim handset and a perfect arc, which means it is not just comfortable to use, but also an enjoyment to look at. This is a design impulse new in the home appliances field. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The iDECT Boomerang is a stylish cordless DECT home phone that meets growing consumer demand for product design that merges functionality with style and beauty. Boasting a glossy black finish with chromed highlights, an ergonomic design and matte accents, the minimalist iDECT Boomerang hides the technical phone elements in a clean and elegant form and deserves to be displayed as art in the home. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Boomerang features all functions of a traditional cordless phones (DECT). The signal between the handset and the base unit is in line with the highest standard for a DECT phone: Maximum range up to 300 meters outdoors or 50 meters indoors. Operation: Plug the power cable and telephone line cord into the sockets of the base station. Charge for 15 hours before using the handset for the first time. With its big dot matrix display and its easy menu the user will find all desired function quickly. PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in October 2013 and finished around May 2014. PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The main housing is designed and manufactured using ABS plastic which gives the Boomerang the strength and durability needed for a long lasting life as well as a superior surface quality and high gloss finishing. The screen lens made of polycarbonate provides a crystal clear visibility as well as being extremely impact resistant. The ABS plastic keypad actuates underneath metal domes providing an excellent tactile response. SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: HD quality sound makes every phone call as clear as a personal conversation. For hands free operation it offers loud and clear speakerphone functionality. The phone has 200 name and number memory, a 30-minute answering machine and the battery lasts for up to 13 hours talk time and 230 hour standby time. Blue back-lit dot matrix display and white laser cut back-lit keypad on handset make it comfortable to use in dark environments. The inspiration came from the idea of throw/catch and the ergonomics of the throwing device. Shaping it with smooth surfaces suggests elegance, fluidity and precision. Absence of visible screws and part lines gives our design a premium look and feel. The surface treatment was inspired from the glossy finish of sports cars, indicating the speed of the Australian throwing device. CHALLENGE: Combining ergonomics and aesthetics and hiding technology was the challenge. Multiple rounds of prototypes and sketches delivered the most comfortable yet functional handset, ear piece and keypad. A focus was on the smooth way to drop the handset into the charging cradle. Visually simplifying the user interface without compromising on features was achieved by hiding the keypad in the base and to expose the sleek and simple back face of the product giving it's iconic and distinctive appeal.
