DESIGN NAME: Bigelow Tea Rebrand
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Tea Gift Set
INSPIRATION: The challenge of creating an on-the-go tea system forced me to think out of the box in my product delivery innovation. I was inspired by bridging the rich history of Bigelow Tea Co. with contemporary design, elevating the branding and structure to feel fresh and relevant, yet classic.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: My assignment was to reinvent the Bigelow brand through an innovative product delivery system, introduced in a gift set package. I created a packaging concept that is fresh and modern, yet classic. The innovative tea concept I developed was Bigelow’s signature teas in the form of a dissolvable powder, compacted into a sphere shape, and individually wrapped in colored cubes. I expanded on these diamond-rotated cubes in the gift box construction, resulting in a unique pyramid inspired structure.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Due to Bigelow’s wide target market of 18-60 year olds, I had to create a packaging concept that is fresh and modern, yet classic. The dissolvable tea in individual boxes are ideal for the on-the-go consumer. By stacking the tea boxes in a unique pyramid formation, the gift box stands out from the competition on the shelves, and is beautiful enough to be proudly displayed in the home.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in October 2013 and finished in January 2014 in New York City.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: After auditing the tea market and researching the current Bigelow products and packaging, I learned that Bigelow Tea is known for its rich history and quality, however it lacked appealing to the high end tea consumer compared to more contemporary high end teas such as Tea Forte. I found that they are lacking an exciting packaging concept to make their traditional branding stand out against a more modern competitive landscape.
CHALLENGE: The most difficult part of the project was taking my innovative dissolvable tea ball concept and creating a unique structure that appeals to a large target market. Tedious calculations and measurements eventually led me to creating a functional and attractive pyramid inspired structure to store the tea boxes.
