DESIGN NAME: Lambda
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Residential Villa
INSPIRATION: The client requested an interior which was unique in character and totally unlike its suburban neighbours. The interiors were to be grand, opulent and theatrical, but compliant with feng shui considerations.
The aim was for repeated symmetrical spaces differentiated by palette and materials, especially the contrast of light and dark first encountered with the external form of the building.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: A unity between architecture and interior design is achieved with this villa. From the outside, Lambda is a powerfully integrated three dimensional form. But once inside, it becomes apparent that this is actually an exploration in the four dimensional design, because the aerodynamic external form generates the interiors, including a number of customised furnishings and fittings. The drama and invention of the external form is matched by a powerful, opulent and theatrical spatial elaboration.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The house consists of a basement, two storeys and an attic. The hub of the house is the dining hall which rises over two storeys. The second storey includes two symmetrical bedrooms of equal size but in different styles. The third storey attic space includes a large study with a customised red painted table looking out to the terrace. The attic also provides three smaller rooms, including a prayer room. In the basement, apart from services rooms, there is a gym, a sauna and a wooden wine cellar.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: Villa Lambda is located in Singapore and the design process began in 2011 and construction of the villa was completed in 2013.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The interior works hand in hand with the architecture. The house is mostly cladded with Travertino Navona and Travertino Noce, creating an interesting contrast between darker and lighter tones. In the dining room hall that spans two floors and is visible from the second floor gallery, stands a dining table made of a slab of white quartz ten meters long; the legs of the table are two large stainless steel stems shaped like the side stanchions of the house with their typical triangular profile.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: The villa's built area is 1500 sqm.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The idea of the interiors was for it to be an extension of the exteriors of the villa. Hence the ten metre long, white quartz customised dining table with two large stainless steel stems with triangular profile references the stanchions of the house. The customised bar counter with its travertine clad face seems to grow out of the floor, while the triangulated legs of the pool table also draw a connection with the external form of the house.
CHALLENGE: Client requirements included a swimming pool with terrace connected to house's interior, a double height dining space with custom designed furnishings, custom created paintings, large living area, two master bedrooms with en suites, three guest rooms with en suites, attic study and prayer room, with back door service rooms, gym, sauna and wine cellar in the basement area. The dynamic form of the building achieves this without seeming monumental. Rather than imposing itself on the site, the building seems to organically inhabit it.
