DESIGN NAME: Roadie
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Mobile App
INSPIRATION: We tried to focus on Expo2015: how to encourage tourists and visitors to choose the bike? Moving by bike is easier and faster in a city like Milan. It makes you live the road sounds and perfumes, and let you see places you wouldn't see otherwise. It makes you know the city deeper. Then we thought that it could be useful to have an app that suggests random thematic journeys. We imagined it as a friend who lives there, who tells you "Come with me, I want to show you something".
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: If you are an Expo visitor and you want to discover the city, Roadie it's a friend that leads you through bike-friendly journeys, based on your preferences and needs. Once you start an itinerary, the audio guide will show you an ancient building, a greedy ice cream shop or the most breath-taking sight. It works with the bike sharing system. Once arrived at destination, you can leave a feedback and record a vocal note, so other users can hear your opinions and suggestion.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Roadie is simple and immediate: since the first access, you can see the first itinerary suggested. Customize the route: every change is visualized on the map. On the right, you can visualize your profile. By sliding left, you can hear users' comments on that itinerary. You can choose the theme, the length and the time you want to ride. Wear your earphones and start the itinerary. The voice will lead you through the city. You can add new spots and leave a feedback or record a vocal note.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in March and finished in June 2014 in Milan. It is the result of an academic course in interaction design, held at Politecnico di Milano.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Hands and pencils are an evergreen technology. Sketches helped us to focus on what we really needed to make the app fluent and easy. Then we started designing wireframes, while trying to realize a quick prototype. The prototype is an incredible tool to understand what works or not.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Roadie uses GPS, so that itineraries are based on the user's position. Itineraries are automatically listed in rankings based on users feedbacks, and this helps to improve the service. As its main feature is the vocal guide, Roadie is supposed to be used together with an earphone. Another key point is the user-generated content. Every user can add new spots, that will be included in future journeys. People can record vocal notes that can provide fresh and informal informations.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Our reearch was about bike mobility in Milan: how much does people use the bike? Do they find any problem? Do they use specific apps? We applied different tools: online surveys, sheets-interviews and one-to-one interviews with experts. The results? People would like to have an app that provides bike friendly journeys but, of course, they can't use mobile while riding. So we started thinking about a vocal guide.
CHALLENGE: The main challenge was to design the kind of service, a service that people need and can use for real. We had to face with Milan bike-sharing service and how it works. Starting from the original idea, we put our efforts in making it more and more easy, fluent and immediate. But the main obstacle we found is the fact that you can't use your phone while riding a bike. That's why we had the idea of the vocal guide. The true experience of Roadie is not the app itself, but the ride.
