PRIMARY FUNCTION: Portable battery case
INSPIRATION: The success of our Parallel (Battery case) for iPhone 5, inspired us to create something even better for iPhone 6. The objective is to create a mechanism that is seamless and more easy to operate and improving the overall design elements. With a bigger screen size, Even more juices are required and therefore, the need for a Parallel 2.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: This 2nd generation of our battery case spots a totally new method to attach the battery and case together. It is carefully engineered and took advantage of the curve edges back of the iPhone 6 to implement a slide and lock system. This leaves the back of the iPhone protective case perfectly clear of any holes required to attach the battery. Leaving it with a clean and minimalistic design.
We didn't like the fact that most or almost all battery cases out there were longer and wider than the form factor of the phone. The screen size is already big, and the phone is already so long, why make it bigger! We wanted the form factor to be retained from the length and width perspective. This is achieved through a hidden and built-in cable with lightning connector. By doing so, we make the case and battery pack same length as the phone. Taking advantage of the iPhone’s curve back edge, we were able to incorporate a ‘catch’ mechanism just at the back of the iPhone Protective case. Therefore again, keeping the width of the product same as the iPhone.
Batteries or PowerBank which is commonly know, is an Emergency product. This means that you ONLY use it when the need arises. There is NO need for consumers to lug around a battery permanently attached to it, adding unnecessary bulk, longer & wider and weight in it when not in use. That’s why we make it detachable. And once detached, the iPhone is still protected with a nicely designed case.
Every detail had been considered and measured to enhance its user-experience. In short, the unique properties will be
1. The slide and lock mechanism
2. The slim profile of the battery pack
3. The minimalistic look and feel design
4. The overall dimension that retains the form factor in terms length and width of the phone
5. The Detachable feature (don't carry the bulk when not in use)
6. The ‘shake’ to activate the battery capacity indicator. Doing away with awful button.

OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The Parallel 2 is made up of 2 key components. A Protective case and a Battery Pack with built-in Lightning connector. The Battery packs slides on the back of the protective case with the ‘catch’ mechanism built at both left and right ends of the protective case. To charge, simply pull out the hidden lightning connect cable and plug into the iPhone. Give the battery pack a ‘shake’ and the LED lights up to indicate the remaining battery capacity in the battery pack.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in January 2014 in Singapore and will be finished by September 2014. Will be exhibited in CES Las Vegas 2015.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The Parallel 2 is made up of 3 different mold for it's component. It consist of the iPhone casing, the battery cover and the battery holder. The choice of material used for the 3 parts were made out of polycarbonate and thermoplastic polyurethane due to its temperature resistance, impact resistance and elasticity properties. They are injection molded and finished differently to achieve visual contrast and feel. The iPhone casing is molded with thermoplastic polyurethane in order for the case to be able to wrap all-round for more protection and impact resistance. The battery holder is finished with rubber coating surface due to the constant contact with the iPhone casing to minimize scratches and better hand feel.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: We adopted a simple ethnography and comparative design research method. The objective is to study how consumers utilize their smart devices and provide the most ideal solution to meet their needs. We studied competitors’ products and evaluated to come out with the most ideal design that meets not just their basic needs of extra power but also a product they will feel proud to carry with them aesthetically to match their lifestyle and fashion wants.
CHALLENGE: The development of the Parallel 2, the thickness of the overall product was the most critical issue of the product. As Apple had a further reduction in the thickness of iPhone with a rounded edge this time. The design was to keep the powerbank as slim as possible and also detachable when it is not in use. In order for that to happen the slider had to be precise and making use of the curvature of the phone to create grooves to catch on to the powerbank.
The Parallel 2's design not only aims to minimize the thickness of the overall product. It is also designed in such a way that it maintains the same length as the iPhone 6 after putting on the Parallel 2. Unlike others that are mostly a bottom insert which increases the length to the overall fit. Therefore if it is weighed for it's utility the extra performance versus the minimal increase in thickness and zero increase in length is pleasantly delightful.
