DESIGN DETAILS
DESIGN NAME:
Aqua Flax

PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Fabric

INSPIRATION:
I would like to tell the next generation the traditional techniques of Japan.

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
We named this fabric, Aqua Linen. It was made from unique old technique in Japan. This technique is not in Europe. This method is absolutely fantastic but It's disappearing. Characteristic of Aqua linen: The yarn of linen will cut off when it twists strongly. But, there is the method of twisting strongly while wet the yarn with water. The fabric which was woven with the strong twisted yarn can make small gap on the surface. As a result, You will get a fresh feeling when wear it. Because the touching area of skin and cloth will be less.

OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
This is for summer dresses.Fabric’s hand feel is quite soft like a gauze. It is made from linen and cotton. The linen is especially unique, because it's caused by Japanese traditional technique which has inherited from a few hundred years ago. The method makes strong twisted linen yarn, but woven fabric by the yarn is rather soft than hard.

PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:
The project started in September 2013 in Kanagawa Japan and finished in March 2014 in Shiga Japan

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY:
This is made from cotton and aqua linen. This weaving is not complicated, but it is also not simple. This material seems  like a patchwork cloth. But it is not. I wanted to express many world by one cloth. A kind of double faced weaving. Those using yarns of different colours to appear the same pattern in front and back. In addition, when the placement of the weft yarn is converted, the visual aspect is further complicated. I aimed complicated pattern. I will show the pattern as below.

SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES:
This product is a fabric. So it is quite flat. The sample fabric size is width 105 cm x length 100cm. Also there are other three more production process samples.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
There exist some volumes of market for adult people who like natural and ethnic tastes fashions. We will try to acquire fans of the market and if successful, repeat rate is also high.It does not interfere with the motivation to buy if you can describe the quality that can convince even a bit higher unit cost of the product. Then, it is possible to recover expenses of product development costs. Other hand, If we forget the attitude of sincere product development, customer will away. We will be asked always ideas and quality on a certain level, but this is the identity of brands.

CHALLENGE:
To express like a patchwork(fabric separately has been patched), I had to to make a complicated pattern with keeping the regulations of weaving machine. This woven fabric made from only 5 colours. Warp yarn are 4 colours and weft yarn are 3 colours as same as warp plus 1 new colour. In textile design, it is difficult to portray richly with limited colours, but,I had to. Other hand, I designed 5 patterns of the basic arrangement of coloured yarn. The 5 patterns can change the order to make more complicated patterns. Likewise, just 5 patterns are easy to set up on weaving machine.
