| DESIGN NAME: Chesset PRIMARY FUNCTION: Chess set INSPIRATION: A friend, wounded in war, returned home and learned to play chess while recuperating in hospital. He grew to love the game and, upon release, continued to seek out opportunities to play. When he found out I knew and played the game, he would bring his chess set to my house. One day, I saw him coming up the street, struggling to walk with crutches and carry his set. That day, I decided I needed a set and wanted to make it myself. At the time, I had no shop or specialized tools, so I created a design that would require only basic tools. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Made from manufactured birch hardwood dowels and blocks, no carving is involved. It is a modern design and piece of art as well as a functional game set. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: This is a table set used to play the game of chess. The chessmen are a Modern interpretation of the traditional pieces. The set is an attractive work of art and may remain on display as room decoration, when not in actual use. PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: This project began forty years ago in New York City. I conceived the design and began the process of figuring out how to make the set in the early 1970s. My first rough version used round wooden dowels for every chess piece and the board. After I retired, I returned to the project and changed the board to a square shape to make it structurally stronger. I have designed and built a total of six chess sets, incorporating small design and structural improvements with each one. The shapes of the pieces evolved to their current form. PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: In creating this chess set in a modern style, I wanted the pieces to be easily recognizable to the average player. I chose birch hardwood dowels of different diameters to shape into the various forms for the chessmen, milling and sawing each piece. To maintain the simple design, all of the pieces were originally the same height; the king and queen became taller when thinner dowels were added on top to make their respective crowns. The game board was made of 64 square manufactured birch hardwood blocks, attached to a plywood base. Square wooden separators between each block make the board appear to float. SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: The king and queen pieces are .076m in height. The rook, bishop and knight pieces are .05m in height. The pawns are .025m in height. All of the chessmen are round and have a diameter of .032m. Each of the chess board's 64 blocks is .05m square. The chess board measures .44m square with a height of .05m. All chessmen and blocks were painted and buffed to a satin finish. Felt covers the bases of all pieces and the board. TAGS: chesset, chess, chess set modern, chesset modern, RESEARCH ABSTRACT: As an artist and life-long aficionado of the game, I was familiar with the rules and regulations of chess. I simply wanted to create a table set that expressed my appreciation for Modern design. CHALLENGE: The main difficulty I faced during production was determining how best to assemble the pieces of the chess board. I solved the problem by adding and attaching the hidden plywood base to the board, using sixty-four .025m spiral groove pins.
