PRIMARY FUNCTION: LED Book Light
INSPIRATION: Mighty Bright has been crafting fine LED book lights for years; however, the Recharge is our first rechargeable book light. We credit our loyal customers with the idea, as they frequently used our indispensable lights they found themselves frequently replacing their batteries. Thus, the concept for a rechargeable, sleek, and modern LED book light was born.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The Recharge creates a new standard for book lights, changing the way book lovers everywhere read. With its sleek body constructed of matte silicone, the Recharge flexes in virtually any direction to cast a bright white beam of light where needed. Its two LEDs provide 8 lumens of light, and its petite clip firmly grasps pages. The energy-efficient Recharge has a 16 hour battery life and charges via an included micro USB cable. The sustainable Recharge never needs replacement bulbs or parts.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The Recharge is operated by clipping it to the top of reading material. The light can be turned on to its brightest setting by pressing the power button located above its clip. Pressing the button a second time dims the light, pressing the button a third time turns the light off. The flexible silicone neck can be bent in any direction to shine the light where needed. A battery indicator flashes when 10 percent of the battery remains. The Recharge is charged via the included Usb cable.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project was started in August 2013 in Hong Kong and finished in August 2014 in Santa Barbara, CA.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: After producing LED book lights for decades many customers expressed interest in a rechargeable version. To determine the best possible design language the team explored popular electronic designs on the market, as well as various flex necks that could be integrated into Silicone and overmolding techniques to ensure the light was both durable and aesthetically pleasing.
CHALLENGE: The two Leds were so bright they shone through the backside of the light head, creating an undesirable, distracting glow on the light head. The white Led cover inside the light head was initially composed of transparent plastic and then painted white. However, when the Led cover was composed of black plastic and then painted white, the undesirable glow was eliminated, as the light no longer passed through to the backside of the head. Aesthetically, the finished product looked the same, but it had greatly improved functionality.
