DESIGN NAME:
golf-grip

PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Golf training aid

INSPIRATION:
My ‘light bulb’ moment came after being asked to play Golf numerous times. “I don’t even know how to hold a Golf club”, became “IS there actually a way you hold a Golf club???”. The answer was yes. A search of the market revealed that an ergonomically moulded grip, which through holes gave you direct contact with your club and could be slipped off and on easily onto any existing golf clubs, did not exist. Thus, the 10 year process of designing and developing the golfgrip began.

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
The golfgrip was designed to train the user to learn the perfect grip, with its ergonomic design, through muscle memory. Whilst easy to install the grip will quickly help reduce hooking, slicing and regripping, the 3 most common problems that can affect a golfer’s swing. With repeated use the brain will automatically begin to use the right grip, even once the aid is removed. What makes the golfgrip different is, its ease of installation, effectiveness, pocket size, discreetness and comfort.

OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
The pocket friendly golfgrip is firstly aligned and then slid onto the club. The graphics on the golfgrip guide the user where to place their hands. The ergonomic nature of the product allows fingers to easily find their place, and the holes allow the fingers maximum contact with the users own Golf club. Other products available on the market are not removable, are not as small and do not allow you to ‘feel’ your own Golf club. Connecting with your own club is very important to ‘learning’ the hand positioning. Over time muscle memory eventually allows you to grip the club without assistance.

PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:
The golf-grip project started in late 2002 going through many stages of development over the years. It finally went into manufacture in late 2012

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY:
Many golf products use cheap materials, which become brittle in the cold and will invariably break or snap as a result or are too flexible and distort exceptionally easily. Experimentation, using a multitude of premium materials, resulted in a combination of components to make the golfgrip perfect. Injected sports grade Pebax TPE combined with a soft Sanoprene TPR were found to be the optimum. The different densities allows the golfgrip to be soft and comfortable to the touch, yet stiff to it’s core, making it strong enough to hold onto your club, but comfortable enough for you to hold.

SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES:
The golf-grip itself measures 13.5 x 3.5 x 4.5cm, and 11 x 20.5 x 4.5 cm when attached to packaging

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
I researched many mediums relating to the correct Golf grip. Various Golf Pro's helped me gain more info relating to the grip. The Pro's hands were molded and I settled on a form that all Pro’s agreed was correct. The tapered nature of the Golf club handle was utilized to make the device a simple ‘friction fit’. I removed more material, allowing the hands more contact with the club. Other devices fit entirely over a club, which makes the handle wider, and teaches the Player an incorrect grip. The golfgrip was therefore designed and developed to give maximum contact with your original club.

CHALLENGE:
There were several challenges. Golfgrip needed to be easily attached and also fit tightly around the Players club. Also the soft and hard material combination and the ergonomic nature of the golfgrip meant that a very complicated dual mould was required. Initially, it was believed to be impossible to manufacture. However, after few late nights, and a lot of computer simulations, we came with the solution. A very complicated mould was fabricated, and was successfully tested. A production mould was developed shortly afterwards.
