DESIGN NAME: CareView 1500C
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Digital flat-panel detector
INSPIRATION: Conventional cassette-sized Flat Panel Detectrs all employ a typical boxy exterior design; restricted by the external dimension and its plain functions, those products are hardly distinguishable between one and another. The Company, CareRay, a small start-up company in SuZhou, is dedicated to its engineering excellence. Its team created a visually unique, easily identifiable design with thoroughly refreshing feeling for users anywhere in the world. In addition, the device shall convey a very modern sensation and human-centric way-of-thinking.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The foldable built-in handle on the product is the first of its kind. Made with light-weight aluminum-alloy, the handle facilitates a comfortable and secure sense in operation. Inside the product, a highly sensitive image sensor is built on a 0.7mm thick 376mmX 452mm size glass substrate. To protect it, all screws which holds the internal frame and enclosure are wrapped with rubbers to absorb and isolate impact energy. The case is constructed from a single pieces of high-strength aluminum alloy with over-sized chamfers around the bottom.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: CareView 1500C is used by medical technicians to take X-ray radiography images. Its size is same as a standard 17"X14" film cassette; and thus can be inserted directly inside a cassette holder on a typical film radiography system. The built-in automatic trigger will sense in-coming X-ray and setup itself immediately to accept X-ray photons and then convert into digital image after exposure is completed. A PC, connected through a Gigabit Ethernet cable, controls and monitors the image acquisition process and displays the processed image on screen.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project was carried out at SuZhou, China; and lasted a year and half since Q3 of 2012 .

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Production of the 1500C involves a set of complex modern technologies, including amorphous silicon (a-Si) TFT and photodiode fabrication on large-size substrate, X-ray scintillator (CsI) deposition and packaging, analog and digital signal processing, printed-circuit board fabrication and assembly (PCBs) and embedded operating system based on power PC architecture. The enclosure and internal uni-body frame of the 1500C is chiseled out of a single piece high-strength aluminum alloy. The rubber band is molded directly with the cover plate (carbon fiber) and forms the inner shock-absorption layer and water-proof seals.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Careview 1500c is designed to be the most popular cassette detectors to meet the needs of radiologist and radiography system manufacturers worldwidely. It's light weight and built-in handle, easily and thoughtfully for clinicians to carry around; its liquid proof and vibration isolation features secure the product from hospital normal use; differs from normal cassette detectors, it has a stylish and refreshing design.
CHALLENGE: 1. design an unusual shape for a product which is confined to its standard external dimensions.
2. Design a light, tough, retractable/foldable handle within a thin space (10mm).
3. Design a vibration absorption mechanism inside the detector such that the device can be used in a mobile van, or transported frequently from one place to another.
4. Develop an efficient cooling/heat dissipation design such that the detector maintains its excellent imaging performance in any reasonable operation environment from outdoor to indoor and fixed to mobile installations.
