| DESIGN NAME: Delband PRIMARY FUNCTION: Pendant INSPIRATION: The first sound that a baby hears in utero is their mother’s heartbeat. The Delband pendant is a symbol of a mother’s protective heart, carrying inside herself her baby’s heart. Delband in Farsi signifies someone who you love from the bottom of your heart, on whose existence you are deeply dependent. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The Delband pendant symbolizes the supportive heart of a mother, pregnant with a little heart. Designed as a gift for two, for mother and child, this pendant comprises a little heart, the child’s, and a big heart, the mother’s. The two hearts are connected by a chain which crosses both. Delband can be used as two independent pendants and the child’s heart pendant can be kept by the mothers until the child grows up. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The best option for the mother’s heart pendant is a long chain. Because there is no ring for the chain to cross, you can pass the chain through the pendant in different ways. Therefore, the user plays her role in part of the design process. The baby’s heart pendant can be used with a short chain and the combination of the two can be used with any chain, depending on users’ taste PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: This project started in February 2013 and was produced in March 2013 in Tehran. It was redesigned and edited in December 2013 and was shown in a solo exhibition in February 2014 in Tehran. |
PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The Rhino and Matrix CAD modeling software has been used for the computer design of Delband pendant. Then the 3D model of pendant has been printed by CPX printing machine. Once it was printed, for the finishing stage, we used a lost wax casting method to cast the wax into a 18k yellow gold. At the final stage of hand polishing, the crystal piece was installed on the smaller heart. SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Small pendant: width 11 mm, height 14 mm, weight 1.5 gram, crystal: 10 mm x 10 mm Mother pendant: width 32 mm, height 35 mm, weight 7.5 gram TAGS: heart, user oriented jewelry, love pendant, birth, jewelry, gold RESEARCH ABSTRACT: - CHALLENGE: The concept came to my mind when a friend of mine who was going to have a baby girl and who would become a father for the first time, was seeking a way to thank his wife and to express his love and happiness for the arrival of this new family member. He asked me to design a unique and valuable object for him. So, I searched for an idea which would be useful for both mother and child and which would reflect this great life event.
