DESIGN NAME: PAPILLON
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Coffee-Table
INSPIRATION: Papillon is an attempt to resolve the opposition between he self-sufficient sculptural object and the container.
As a sculptural object, Papillon is a poetic work on foliage between rest and movement, a play with order and chance, balance and gravity. From a functional point of view, it's a proposal that solves storage and display of books and magazines under a glass table in a simple and elegant way.
No loss of purity through usage, no sacrifice of functionality on behalf of formal intention.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: A single, flat element is combined into spatial structure, to be liberally disposed under a glass-top, thus providing inclined storage space that always brings its content into a loose order. Different shapes of glass can be combined with base elements of various colours and numbers.
While empty, supporting elements evoke leaves and open books in a random harmony that only subtly mutates through reading matter piling up inside.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: 1x2x3+1.
A polygonal slab entangled with another, identical one, emerges into spatial structure.
Three of these come together and, seemingly effortlessly, sustain a sheet of glass.
Slight unevenness of floors is absorbed through tetrahedral geometry.
Gravity plays a heavy role:
It not only maintains everything upright, but also in order.
In this sea of slabs, magazines pile up naturally.
With or without reading matter,
beneath the resting coffeecup a vague sensation of soft flutter is perceived.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: This design had been on my mind for a long time without taking final shape. But it wasn't until I did the interior design for my wife's dentists surgery in 2010 that I would finally come up with the definite solution. So it was 2011 when the prototype was done, which still serves in the surgery. Since then the design has been refined and small editions have been produced.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: -
CHALLENGE: The initial aim was to create a random landscape underneath a glass top, that would look slightly different with press and books inside, but would never lose it's original character. The challenge was to achieve this with as little as possible simple elements, since I wanted it to be industrializable. After lots of intents I came up with one unique shape for the base elements that looks different from any angle and creates this random effect I had been looking for.
