DESIGN NAME: Coexistence With Cats
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Residential House
INSPIRATION: The inspiration came from the realization of the issues that affected both inhabitants of the home, in its previous form. Both the cats and humans had become acclimatized to their conditions, but seen from a fresh perspective these issues became clear.
The design is based around the living conditions of both house cats and stray cats and their ‘life styles’. The architecture and materials epitomize this and at the same time appeal to the humans modern perspective on design.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The house is designed around the interaction between cats and humans - not as pets and owners, but as harmonious co-inhabitants. The design looks at the 'flow' inside the house so that it is not overcrowded, in doing this it looks at the close emotional distance of both inhabitants as the occupy the different spaces.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The main aspect of the design was to better the 'flow' of interaction between cats and humans. After the rennovation completion the cats are able to use and explore more of the space and in a way that reflects their natural habitat.
The design helps the occupnats to coexist in a relaxed manor but also enjoy each others company by creating a comfortable emotional distance through the use of design elements.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The total duration for the project was 1 year and a half, including concept development and construction.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: For this project, the research was mainly quantitative.
Firstly research was done into the understanding of the physical and physiological effects spaces can have on cats from published papers and literature.
Secondly the observation of both house cats and stray cats was undertaken to understand their behavior, movements and daily life routines. Also the interaction between cats and humans was important within the confines of a home but also in public.
CHALLENGE: The main challenge that the design had to overcome was to create a space for both the cats and the humans. Throughout the design, at no point, was a design element based exclusively at either the cat or the human, it had to be holistic for all.
