DESIGN NAME: Snakey
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Cleaning Robot
INSPIRATION: The inspiration comes from the snake. The snake with its long body can curl up and can slither in many terrain. if wherever it goes, it helps to clean as well, it will be an amazing cleaning machine. we also intentionally design the docking system like a tree, so that once SNAKEY our robot is done with the job, it curls up and rest and recharge under the "tree"; the docking system. we are also inspired by the advancement in robotics; experiments found on videos posted by graduate works. we believe our design merges both styling, technology and also function for our homes.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Everyone likes their home clean. It will be nice if Something can help them while they are busy at work or out at play. Snakey is the cleaning robot that is able to climb stairs, maneuver into corners for a complete cleaning job. It weaves itself around your home quietly and finally goes back to its docking system to relieve the dust and to recharge itself.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: When you buy this product, you have to place it at a central place in your home. You have to initialise the product and Snakey will move around your home memorising the space and sensoring obstacles. Afterwhich it can start cleaning the home. It slithers like the snake and each module is a cleaner by itself. Because of its snake like motion, it can climb up staircases and to places where other automatic vaccuum cleaners cannot. It can also clean as a curled up form- moving round and round. It goes back to the docking system to discharge the dust and also to recharge. As the user you must periodically empty the docking system bin and change filter to ensure best performance. It also has a remote contro unit that you can use it to control SNAKEY.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project took 4 weeks in conceptualisation and execution of concept. It took place in our studio in Singapore, Ubi road.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: This technology is really a moving sensorial vacuum cleaner. It can sense it surroundings and with robotics, move up stairs while current existing vacuum cleaners cannot. At the same time, it can dispense an aroma anti-bacterial mist of your liking and makes your home smell clean and fresh.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: the whole package is 410mm (x) by 410mm (y) by 553mm (height)

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The Objective was to design a home cleaning apparatus. The home cleaning industry is a billion dollar industry - ranging from floorcare to sweepers to electronic cleaners, etc. A home is where we rest, work and play with our loved ones. It is very important to keep it clean.
In our society and to maintain an affluent lifestyle, we see a societal trend for couples to be both working and when they return home, they are too tired to clean. Domestic helpers and maids can be an expensive incurrence. Hence an automated cleaning robot which quietly cleans your floor is much needed.
The team begins by understanding the needs of homes in our context and what are the terrains at homes, be it wooden parquet, carpet, marble or granite tiled floors. The cleaning regularity and methods were also being investigated. Interviews and observational research with other products were carried out.
The conclusion is that there is a strong want and need from consumers to have automated, effective home cleaning done without much fuss. Hence the team decided to research and proceeded to design a home cleaning appliance Based and inspired by robotics, successful snake-like forms by other groups in other countries caused us to rethink home appliance design and to change existing static forms of vacuum cleaning.
CHALLENGE: The Challenge was to design a product that brings robotic technology with its multi-sensor, mechanical movements and odometry together motor for vacuum performance, with nice styling and yet user-friendly for the masses. Designing it to be mass commercialised is a constant challenge.
