DESIGN NAME: Globe Ring, Artelier by Cristina Ramella
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Ring
INSPIRATION: The main inspiration for designing the collection is the idea of what the World represents for many of us today: a passion for traveling, discovery and universality. A globalization of cultures, languages and flavors that are becoming part of who we are and help define us uniquely as individuals. This collection of jewelry represents and reminds us of what we have discovered in this beautiful world, and encourages us towards what's still left to be experienced.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: This 3D printed Ring is a detailed reproduction of the globe. Every country is cut trough the metal and the world itself represents the precious stone that crowns the ring.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Place on your annular or middle finger.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: This project was designed first in Mexico in August 2013 and it's been retailed all over the world thanks to Artelier's webpage and the 4 showrooms that have started promoting the brand in Europe, Mexico, Canada and Australia.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The high quality production was the most challenging design aspect: it was all about selecting and learning the material's breaking points, challenging the piece's detail limits, processes of manufacture, and collaborative exchanges between designers, craftsmen and manufacturers. Through the definition of the wax model that could hold up all the design imperatives, the pieces are finally casted. It's process has been the result of a highly-technified crafting effort, which brings the best of both worlds: tradition and technology.
CHALLENGE: Many models had to be done as the ring's inner walls where falling apart and it was very difficult to find the perfect design that could hold up both strength and weareablity of the ring. We tested several metals that collapsed or created air bubbles, which lowered the quality of the piece. Detail in the excavation demanded a sphere that should be as big as possible. Design imperatives required exactly the opposite: a well balanced scale that could be proportioned to the ring, the finger, and the hand.
