DESIGN NAME: MAXX
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Modular Sofa / Bed / Day-Bed
INSPIRATION: Transforming multipurpose furniture served as the primary inspiration. We were then inspired by the idea of an automobile headrest to design the movable back rests of the MAXX sofa which allowed us to easily transform it.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: MAXX is a modular sofa that easily converts for multiple uses. The sofa back rests can be relocated on the frame to create a variety of configurations, including a double sided sofa, a deep sofa, a california queen bed, a double chaise and and a single chaise or three separate chaise lounges. A mattress topper and bed linens are concealed under panels beneath the seat cushions. There are built in tables set into the side arms that each include a tall slender vase which is recessed in the frame.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: MAXX easily converts to a deep sofa or a large comfortable bed. It can also be separated into sections to offer chaise seating. Each configuration includes tables recessed in the side arms with a recessed vase on each arm that will hold tall cut flowers without ever tipping.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: This was a three month long process that was completed in Chicago.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: MAXX is functional for both indoor and outdoor use so the materials vary. We prefer to use natural materials with low to no VOC products and finishes.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: The backrests are fitted with posts that fit grometed openings on the center and both outer frames. When the back rests of the sofa are aligned on an outer frame, the lounging area has the same dimensions as a california queen sized bed. A mattress topper and bed linens are stored under panels beneath the cushions.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: We studied ergonomics and proportions to maximize the usability and comfort of each configuration.
CHALLENGE: The technical challenge was being able to easily relocate the back rests and be sure they would stay firmly in place.
