DESIGN NAME:
ShiftClips

PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Toy Design 3D Printing App

INSPIRATION:
The project initially intended to study means to reduce pollution created by manufacturing, and address the contradictions inherent in contemporary consumer society. Eventually the focus was narrowed down to investigate alternative production and consumption opportunities offered by 3D printing technological efficiencies.

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
Toy Maker ShiftClips app is a product-service platform for inventors 10 and up to create and 3D print their own toys. The smart tablet GUI allows users to develop and edit simple or complex forms from scratch, or using its form library, and select fasteners to integrate with the forms to generate their own articulated, construction toys. The playfully simple GUI is an ideal educational tool to nurture creativity, awareness of fabrication, appreciation of aesthetics, and design thinking skills.

OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
Users at home, in workshops or at school are given a number of creative options to construct their own construction toys. The smart tablet GUI allows users to develop and edit simple or complex forms from scratch, or using its form library, and select fasteners to integrate with the forms to generate their own articulated playthings. Toy models designed with ShiftClips may be printed at home. ShiftClips Ltd. also provides high quality 3D printing services and delivery for online consumers.

PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:
The project started in February 2013 and finished in April 2013 in Hong Kong, and was exhibited in PolyU Design Annual Show in September 2013.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY:
Rough finishing characterizes objects produced by consumer-grade tabletop printers. ShiftClips offers a dual fabrication scenario. Users satisfied with basic surface finishing would print their objects at home using ABS or PLA. For quality surface finishing and high accuracy Vero resin would be used in the fabrication of parts by the more sophisticated machinery of the company, and shipped to users.

SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES:
ShiftClips aims at leveraging the advantages of 3D printing to offer alternative consumer opportunities offered by its technological efficiencies. These were identified as follows: 1. Support generation of creative forms 2. Facilitate production of complex forms 3. Cancel need for moulds 4. Reduce material wastage 5. Reduce pollution emissions 6. Nurture creative prosumer alternatives

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
Primary and secondary research was conducted to assess design opportunity in 3D Printing market, and appreciate design abilities of children 10 and up. Product benchmarking, expert interviews, user-centered creative workshops, and user tests were used to collect data on market opportunity and user creative outputs of children aged 10 to 14. This led to the design of a simple 3D printing smart tablet app educational product-service platform for users to create and fabricate construction toys.

CHALLENGE:
Due to the fact that this is a construction toy, using different fasteners, controlling the mechanical and assembly tolerance of the clips was essential so as to suit different 3D printing equipment, processes, and materials such as ABS or PLA, most commonly used on desktop 3D printers. In order to create an appropriately workable model, we developed and 3D printed several generations of models with support from the Industrial Centre of the University and 2 Hong Kong 3D printing companies.
