DESIGN NAME: Orbis Gold and Concrete Jewellery
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Necklace
INSPIRATION: It was in answer to a challenge from my husband who suggested I create a new line using concrete spheres. Figuring out how to cast a perfect sphere was the main challenge to overcome, much before the actual design of the collection came into fruition. It took many trial and error experiments over a time period of three years to finally produce the desired end result. It was a very rewarding experience to solve the dilemma and the actual design of the collection came together very quickly afterward.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: This necklace is created from a cast concrete sphere which is suspended from a hand-forged hollow 18k gold sphere.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: This necklace is an elegantly simple piece which can be worn with just about anything.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The initial prototyping phase started in June of 2010 and finished in May of 2013. It is now available for sale on our website at konzukshop.com

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The concrete spheres are cast using a one part silicone mould - developed within our studio. The concrete used is High performance concrete which results in a perfect finish and near indestructibility
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: total length of necklace: 32mm / 13.5mm concrete sphere / 9.5mm gold sphere

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The research entailed experimenting with different types of casting moulds/techniques. The objective was to have the final outcome of a perfect, seamless sphere. Many different tools were utilized such as bullet moulds, two part chocolate moulds, and cast silicone moulds. The results were achieved by creating a flexible cast silicone mould which allowed the balls to be popped out with minimal finishing required.
CHALLENGE: The hardest part of this designing this collection was to avoid having the final pieces look like jewelry worn by the "Flintstones". Due to the labor involved in hand-forging the gold spheres and the cost of the gold material, the collection needed to look high-end to justify the price-point.
