DESIGN NAME: Supercar System
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Customer configurable automotive system
INSPIRATION: Currently customers buy cars pre-ordained by the auto makers which are obsoleted after 3-5 years by the auto maker. Supercar System not only enables the customer to configure and re configure their vehicle to their taste and budget, but it eliminates the waste of planned obsolescence by the OEM. The system is sustainable because customer upgrade as much or as little as they need, and subsidize their purchase by reselling their older component into the systems enthusiast community for a 2nd life.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Supercar System is a recreational vehicle that is easily configurable by the customer to meet their changing performance, styling and budgetary desires.
Customers can configure and re-configure their vehicle with no special tools or skill required, democratizing design decisions away from the manufacturer and into the hands of the customer.
Operating costs are similarly reduced costing no more to run than a typical family sedan with servicing available at over 20,000 GM dealers.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Feeling is everything in a performance vehicle. Feeling provides feedback and feedback provides confidence. Delivering a design that has the right amount of steering and pedal effort and a gear change to bring real joy and accomplishment to the art of shifting. Electronic safety aids intrude minimally but are always present. The driving experience is close to riding a super bike. There is a direct connection to the machine and in turn, the tires to the pavement, where every gesture is rewarded by a precise vehicle reaction.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: Designed under a special projects agreement with General Motors between 2010 and 2013
Key supply partners: Brembo brakes, OZ racing, Ohlins suspension and Quaife motorsports
Product and Safety standards by F.I.A. and M.I.R.A.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The chassis is the key to the system’s ability to perform safely at extreme levels. Combining light weight, rigidity, parts consolidation, multiple -function components, human factors, proportion and aesthetics to make a vehicle whose beauty is more than skin deep. The system is a study in invention with over 72 patent claims pending. All legalities are engineered on to the chassis. This revolutionary design completely liberates and simplifies the body to perform only aerodynamic and aesthetic functions.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Body, Carbon fiber composite in silver, black or GRP metallic grey. In various body styles.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Research showed cars with similar performance totaled 14,800 units in 2012 across 4 brands from $250,000 to $400,000 or about $3.5 billion in total sales. Source: Polk This illustrated a large price value gap, and an older buyer. Through trade organization S.E.M.A. we saw there was a large untapped market, a younger much large audience, but with less disposable income. We then took a prototype and conceptual boards to track days around the country and held focus groups to overwhelming interest.
CHALLENGE: The system complies with all 50 state registration requirements in the U.S and the Europe,s IVA with Germany's T.U.V. pending.
The challenges have been many but we’re proving the numbers, the product and the design work to the customers benefit.
The process applied here is usable on a larger scale when applied to both 3rd world people movers and electric-hybrid power trains especially.
