DESIGN NAME: Don Luis
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Traffic signal
INSPIRATION: Starting from a question. Why people do not implement the excellent behavior they have when they use the Medellin Metro while crossing the streets?.
The Metro culture means respect for rules and generates a subconscious process of being a model citizen. Furthermore, analyzing the high figures of accidents, the challenge was to create a solution based on pedestrians insight instead of traditional interventions that dont focus on their brains behavior.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Don Luis is a tridimensional traffic signal that binds to a yellow bidimensional line painted on the sidewalk to avoid the pedestrian cross the street at a different place to zebra and is located only at the points of greatest vulnerability. It is different to others due to their development from a sociocultural analysis and not merely from aesthetic guidelines. In other words, it seeks to transfer the good behavior and the idea of security implemented by the Medellin Metro to the streets.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: "Don Luis" is a traffic signal that, using their semantic characteristics, invites pedestrian to cross the street only by the zebra.
Its shape and color correspond to 4 meanings associated with a recognized imagery in the city as "The Metro culture" in which respect for the rules, the appropriation of spaces and life care are the common factor among users. Safety, respect, approval and recognition; meanings that seek to reaffirm the imaginary ensuring the effectiveness of the character.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in July 2011 in Medellin and finished in December 2014 in
Medellin.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: This character is produced through iron casting, for which a negative mold made of wood is required, which is then pressed into the largest sand mold for this to take shape, then remove the mold and then make the casting (there must be several landfills to prevent the metal from rapidly curing and thereby to uniformly solidify in order to prevent internal fissures). After being casted, it then proceeds to the polishing of burrs and finally it is painted with traffic paint electrostatically.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Dimensions: 1050 mm x 100 mm x 1300 mm
No rupture occurs after mechanical tests, even applying an oversized 100kg force.
(The normal force is about 30 - 35 kgs)
The factor of safety must be larger than 1.0 to avoid failure. The FOS of this solid
is 29.88 (it means excellent conditions).
Material: Iron
Weight: 21,5 Kgs
Volume: 21,572 cms3

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Field research which aims to analyze and create the solution to the reasons why pedestrians disrespect some traffic laws. Tools like direct observation,
government documents and interviews were used on pedestrians. Traffic accidents cost the state almost USD 2 million (vial Prevention Fund). When analyzing Medellin, yellow Metro line was identified as a respected signal, capable of arousing a behavioral response to not exceed and increase the welfare of society.
CHALLENGE: The hardest part was to create a proper transition between the yellow traffic paint line (2D) and the character (3D). This transition should have incorporated universal design principles like being simple and intuitive, little physical effort and flexible use. Furthermore, not generate visual pollution. Finally, it was complex the analysis of the guidelines of the manual of public space due to their strict regulations, however, the team had to ensure its viability.
