DESIGN NAME: Prism
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Coffee Table
INSPIRATION: Inspiration for this project was found in experimenting with both natural and mathematical forms.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Prism is a table that tries to unite opposing concepts. Composed of a minimal frame, which holds within it a complex array of elastic, its frame is created using modern technology, whilst the elastic has to be painstakingly threaded by hand. Its geometry weaves a complicated pattern which is in fact the result of only two simple equations. Its frame is silver stainless steel which radiates into a rainbow of colour. It is only by uniting these opposing ideas that Prism is able to form a balance.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Prism, is a table which is completely static in its form. However for the observer who moves around the table there is a continuous flow of changing forms. From every angle this table unveils something new, showing a new line of pattern, a new void, a new colour combination. The ever changing element of this table tries to provide a unique experience to the viewer each time they look at it.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: This project was first envisioned in November of 2012. It took most of a year until the first prototype was made. It was unveiled on the internet in January of 2014 and appeared across many design websites. The first production run of the table will be completed in March of 2014.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The stainless steel frame of this table makes use of several technologies. The outer frame is made of 16 x 16mm solid bar and the inner framing from 16 x 5mm bar. Before being welded together there are 200 holes drilled into the frame by a laser cutter. There is also a channel cut out of the main bar of the piece by a CNC router in order to conceal the ends of the elastic ropes.
12mm toughened glass is used for the table top.
1.5mm elastic is used to create the coloured pattern within the table.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Looking at string art I found that it is quite predominantly a two dimensional art form. Looking to mathematics I investigated different equations that create beautiful curves and patterns. Combining art precedents and mathematical forms helped me arrive at my outcomes.
Through experiments with materials such as wire, wool and thread, many trials were required to come to elastic as the perfect material to complete this concept successfully.
CHALLENGE: In order to create a balanced pattern within this table it was necessary to come up with constraints and rules to create a guiding logic. Using a prism as inspiration gave me a clear parameter, resulting in a triangulated form. Functionally a triangular form is optimal, allowing access under the table from 3 sides, making the table comfortable to have in a living environment.
After experimenting with many forms, the table was simplified to a pure, straight forward system. There are only 2 patterns which repeat in mirror. A minimal logic which results in a very complex visual effect.
