DESIGN NAME: Polycom RealPresence Immersive Studio
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Video Collaboration Room
INSPIRATION: We were inspired by the opportunity of making collaboration between teams in different geographic locations feel like it was happening in the same room. This motivation carried through all aspects of the design, including hiding the cameras and other technology, using natural high-end materials, providing comfortable seating and lighting, and using life-size HD screens for viewing remote participants and shared content.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: What makes this system truly collaborative is its versatility. Participants may move naturally around the room while still captured full-scale on camera displayed on 84-inch 4K Ultra HD displays. Polycom 3D Voice delivers clear, pinpoint audio which comes directly from the person speaking. The room can also seat up to 21 people on screen. Through the use of pioneering technology and uncompromising design, the RealPresence Immersive Studio is the international collaborative tool for the future.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The RealPresence Immersive Studio is designed to replace existing conference rooms. Whether it’s making a call, sharing or arranging content, the touch screen supports all interactions with intuitive interface. During collaborative meetings, participants may move naturally around the room while still captured full-scale on camera while the 84-inch 4K Ultra HD displays can be used to share content in a multitude of arrangements from a touch screen controller.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in May, 2012 and continued until production in December of 2013.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: We intensely researched organizations with a strong need for collaborative spaces and their experiences with other collaborative tools. The research established that many corporate environments are not conducive to creative thinking. Little attention was placed on how comfortable and energized people felt in the room. We established a range of principles to encourage creative thinking by recognizing that hiding technology helped put people at ease, resulting in more natural behavior.
CHALLENGE: Telepresence rooms are in high-demand as international collaboration increases, but companies update them infrequently due to cost. In response, the following key ideas were formulated: The room design should be simple enough to preserve a timeless quality and provide easy access to technology components for upgrades. The system should provide executive comfort but feel accessible to all. The room should support different types of meeting behaviors and scenarios. Cameras should be disguised to avoid user discomfort.
