DESIGN NAME: Forest Lodge ECO House
PRIMARY FUNCTION: ECO House
INSPIRATION: I was inspired by the chance to design and build a contemporary ECO house on one of the last remaining vacant land sites in the city of Sydney with a width of 4.9 meters and a total land area of only 89m2.
Many years of research and development would be encompassed within the structure of this building.
The finished building stands as testament to current design, complimenting the neighbouring terraces and placing it in the urban history of the city of Sydney.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: We were engaged to design and build a contemporary ECO home in the heart of Sydney Australia's heritage listed precinct. Designing every facet of the project from the external facade, green roof, vertical gardens, interiors, fittings and furnishing enabled us to ensure that the philosophy of the design flowed seamlessly throughout every element of the project showcasing the best of contemporary design ideas.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The house has received an 8.5plus Star rating based on its energy efficiency and thermal performance. One of the highest in Australia. The average house in Australia has an average star rating of 3.5 to 4.
Contributing factors are, Double glazed LowE windows , Roof and vertical gardens, LED lighting throughout, Solar heating of house and hot water tank, Internal and external solar blinds, Water features for evaporative cooling.
The Air Conditioning has not been used due to the house being so well insulated.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in July 2012 and was completed at the end of August 2013 in Forest Lodge in the heart of Sydney Australia's heritage precinct.
The project was featured on the television series Grand Designs Australia in November 2013.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Eco design principals were used to create intelligent innovative design. Many of the systems were custom designed and built specifically for this house, providing innovation not seen in Australia. Examples are 1.Solar tubes that store heat in the under ground heat storage cell below the house. 2.The water pipes connected to the steel reinforcement mesh of the concrete slab are heated by solar allowing warm air to rise and create free heating on demand. 3. Free solar hot water. 4 Second hand bricks were also used
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: The land size is 89m2.
The internal living space is 120m2.
There is 1m2 more of external green space then internal living space.
The house has 3 bedrooms 2 bathrooms and laundry.
The entire houses LED lighting is equivalent to 3 x 60watt standard light globes.
Double glazing to all windows.
3,500 litre underground water tank.
Use of second hand building materials to minimise the carbon footprint.
Excess materials were sorted and taken for recycling.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: I lived and worked in Europe and America for 5 years, where I expanded my awareness and knowledge and I truly learned the benefits of sustainable design.
I returned to Australia with a clear vision of a sustainability model I could tailor to Australian conditions. Forest Lodge ECO house is the result of years of research.
CHALLENGE: The challenge was creating a sustainable ECO home that was not an eyesore to its surrounding, 140 year old heritage listed neighbours. The design had to consider the proportions of the neighbouring adjoining terraces to allow it to fit within the council parameters. Access to the site was heavily constrained requiring creative thinking for both design and delivery of materials forcing many ideas to be custom fabricated. Years of research gained through working on international sustainable projects assisted greatly with the design.
