Desk Lamp

INSPIRATION:
I love modern and industrial design but at the same time appreciate organic and handmade. This lamp has best of both worlds, clean minimal modern design complimented with warm organic handcrafted wood. Modern minimal and warm organic is beautifully accentuated with colored fabric cords that add a dash of fun and unique character to the lamps. At Gagan Design we believe "The Best Things In Life Are Still Made By Hand"

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
Peg-Lamp is very functional and minimal modern design lamp. Made out of cylindrical wood rod the lamp stands on the desk at an angle with the support of a simple colored peg inserted into a hole. Warmth of wood is beautifully complimented with colored fabric cords and matching pegs. The lamp uses environmentally friendly bright warm white LED light that disperses evenly across the desk. If you love clean, minimal modern, fun and unique then this is a beautiful statement standing on your desk.

OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
Using this lamps is as simple as its minimal design. A colored wooden peg is inserted in the lamp rod to make the lamp stand at an angle on the desk. A micro toggle switch is fitted into the base of the lamp for easy access to turn the lamp on/off.

PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:
This lamp originally started on paper in 2012 and many prototypes and development later was finished in few months. The lamp was then tested out with consumers and with their feedback certain enhancements were made to perfect the clean minimal modern design. Every lamp is hand crafted in Canada.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY:
Behind every simple design is a lot of product development and prototyping. This is a handcrafted lamp using new age LED light strips. 11/16 inch wood dowels are routed to fit LED strips and the wires are run through a long 12 inch hole through the dowel. A micro-switch and a fabric cord is them carefully fitted into the 11/16" dowel with great precision and finesse. The LEDs are then covered with a light diffuser that spreads the light evenly. The lamp is also given multiple coats of clear-coat. There's a lot of work that goes into a single simple looking lamp and the result is simply beautiful.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:

CHALLENGE:
It is said that 'simplicity is the ultimate sophistication'. A simple and minimal product is usually not that simple in fabrication and development. The clean slim profile of the lamp made it very challenging to run the wires, circuit, LEDs and switch through the 11/16 inch wooden rod. Boring long straight holes through the 24 inch rod is a challenge that even baffles many veteran woodworkers. We worked through many jigs to accomplish this and overcome this main challenge. We checked with many experienced woodworkers and researched online to find a way to bore clean long hole through the wood rod and the replies weren't very encouraging since most of them thought it's literally impossible to dill 1/4 inch wide and 15 inch long hole through a wood rod that just 11/16 inch in diameter. Laying the wires and connecting the micro switch was nothing short of performing a micro surgery. Everything is crafted by hand at our studio one piece at a time and it's our hands that can still perform the tasks no machine could.

Gagan Design

PROFILE:
Gagan Design is aviation furniture and modern + minimal lighting design studio. Every piece is unique work of art and is handcrafted in Canada. We endeavor to blend innovation with fine craftsmanship mixing equal parts human touch and spirit in our lamps. Bring one home to read a book, light up the room or just invite a conversation. In a time when things are constantly getting automated and mass produced, we’re taking a step back to pause, appreciate and take time to touch, caress and craft every piece of wood by hand. We’re not manufacturers, we’re craftsmen. We take time to handcraft each piece, bit by bit, weaving a symphony just for you because we believe the human in us still appreciates a human touch, a hug over a like, a tete-a-tete over a tweet, for there is spirit and magic in things our hands touch against things that come out of a mold, for we truly believe... The Best Things In Life Are Still Made By Hand.™
