DESIGN NAME: Hatton Place
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Residential Apartment
INSPIRATION: The contrast struck up by the lush Lung Fu Mountain surrounding the apartment, and the view of Hong Kong’s high rises as a cosmopolitan collage inspired this project’s design concept: the juxtaposition of nature and luxurious comfort.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: To echo the beauty of Lung Fu Mountain surrounding the backside of the apartment, we used natural hues and woods without varnish throughout the space. Furthermore, we oriented the bathtub in the master bathroom to directly face the window that opened into the beautiful greens.
But a taste of luxury was the tone the owner wanted to set for their frequenting guests. Encapsulating the union of nature with luxury, a tree silhouette intricately cut out of a wooden panel would welcome visitors at the entrance. They would then walk into the enlarged kitchen and minibar-cum-breakfast bar, which the owners could show off their cooking skills. Finally, food would be served to the guests on the long, marble dining table.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The owners were a couple living the modern, fast-paced lives. The husband worked long hours and traveled often, so was not always at home. With only two people in the household, we decided to rework the three-bedroom layout to yield a large master bedroom and a study. We gave the study a sliding tinted glass partition instead of a formal door to keep the husband connected to his home even when he needed to work.
