| DESIGN NAME: Spot-Not the decanter dryer PRIMARY FUNCTION: Decanter Dryer INSPIRATION: A challenge of finding a solution to a problem that has not been addressed yet. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Spot-Not Decanter Dryer is the only decanter dryer that is able to dry the inside and outside of any shape of decanter. It solves the age-old problem of preventing the formation of spots on the insides of wine decanters and carafes. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The magnets on the outer mitt attract magnets in the inner drying cloth. As you move the drying mitt- the drying cloth also moves and so it allows you to manipulate the cloth and dry the most complex shape decanters. PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in June 2013 in Toronto and was completed in February 2014 in Toronto |
PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The decanter dryer consists of two main parts: a drying cloth that is inserted into the decanter with magnets attached to a rubber pieces and a drying mitt for the outside of the decanter that also has magnets. SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Both the drying cloth and drying mitt are 130 mm in diameter. The drying cloth contains three 10 mm N35 magnets. The drying mitt contains three 20 mm diameter and 4 mm thick neodymium N35 magnets TAGS: glassware accessory, wine accessory, cleaning accessory, houseware gadget; tableware gadget; stemware accessory RESEARCH ABSTRACT: We had to investigate and make decisions about size and strength of magnets, so that they will be strong enough to work but small enough to fit into the decanter and be manipulated. CHALLENGE: To come up with a concept for a decanter dryer that would work on any shape of decanter. We tried a number of different approaches and none of them worked well enough. The magnet approach allowed the drying cloth to move inside in any shaped glass container.
