DESIGN NAME: São Ville
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Tractor
INSPIRATION: When it comes to agricultural production, tractors take a central, indispensable position, because of their multitasking abilities. They work with many different additional periphery tools and machines, that can be connected to them. As result these add-ons have led to heavily overloaded cockpits with lots of buttons and levers, most of them not as intuitive and ergonomic as they should be.
On the other side technological development in the area of smart phones and tablets has made us almost equally productive in the office and while on the go. These have long grown out of the gadget niche, today taking a key role in helping us manage daily tasks or controlling specific peripheral machines and tools, in many different areas.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The Sao Ville design study offers a sophisticated approach to the modern agricultural management, simplifying the tractor´s cockpit by applying a cost effective, simple to operate, upgradeable interface in form of a tablet. Offering an easy to access and rich in functions platform to the operator, which would be otherwise difficult to implement. Added value is also the full overview and management of the crop by using specific agricultural applications installed on a tablet, able to communicate wirelessly with a central office.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The “São Ville” tractor is meant to have a simplified cockpit layout, in the meantime offering high productivity through a versatile and multifunctional platform, which is represented by a tablet computer. The user can operate the peripheral tools of the tractor over the touch screen tablet as well as manage and overview the crop by using installed agricultural applications. The tablet equipped cockpit also allows transmitting the relevant crop data wirelessly to a remote office, as well as help the user to orientate on the field through global positioning applications.
A tablet platform also allows cost effective update of the tractor´s functions. The obligatory passenger seat is intelligently integrated. It features a unique hinge that slides the seat sideways, when not in use, in order to offer more room for entering and exiting the tractor´s cockpit.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in May 2013 and finished in November 2013 in Barcelona, Spain.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: -
CHALLENGE: The hardest part of the project was to simplify and improve a classic machine, that is at home in a traditional and conservative field. This could be achieved by defining a modern yet contemporary style of the exterior and interior, resembling the technological progress and resulting higher productivity, better usability by using modern technology like a tablet computer.
