Multifunctional magnetic Bag for Tablets
Tablets and smartphones are increasingly popular - they are now part of everyday life. But while there are nowadays many bags or stands for tablets, few can be both at the same time, and few feel secure enough, convenient enough for practical daily use, especially when travelling. To answer to this lack I've felt, I've imagined this special bag based on magnetic technology to carry with a security that can be trusted not only tablets, but also smartphones and others everyday devices of the contemporary man, and to be able to use them immediately, with extreme convenience, anywhere and at any time. The choice of material and shape, minimalistic and simple, wishes to respect the original tablets design, the bag reflecting what it carries.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
This innovative neoprene folding bag is equipped with 4 multi-stretchable pockets to carry all what the businessman or woman usually needs immediately available at hand : phones, USD key, stylus, business and credit cards, passport and tickets, cash, etc. Inside the bag, magnets and anti-shock stainless steel case enable to carry a tablet securely, and to stand it up in 6 different positions depending on the viewing needs. A simple, light and slim bag enables to carry all what usually goes in several bags and wallets in one stylish package.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
This bag is used self-intuitively. The tablet is enclosed in its case, the magnets fix it at the center of the bag to be carried easily and safely. The stretchable pockets can be filled with any small necessary item, potentially eliminating the need of a wallet. A strap on the outside enables to carry or hold the bag with one hand, or on the arm. Rest the bag on any horizontal surface, open it and fold it alongside the rims, and it becomes a stand that lets you put the tablet on 6 different position depending on the needs : easy typing, reading, watching a movie or playing. Useful at home, and particularly useful when travelling, as you can effortlessly carry the stand in one hand and type with the other, and stand it up anywhere.

This project started in november 2012 and finished in April 2013.
It was first exhibited in the HKTDC in APRIL 2013.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY:
To achieve this product, we've chosen to use neoprene fabric to provide a totally protective pad. The two panels are in fine carbon plate in which are inserted N45 magnetic strips to attach the tablet stainless steel case .
To better carry devices or accessories the integrated head-lining pockets are in stretchable polyester 210D soft density.
Materials and position of the magnets and pockets have been reviewed and modified along the way to better match users actual needs. The goal being to combine resistance, safety of the device and lightness of the bag.

While conceiving this bag, the focus was first security, the goal being to ensure the convenience of use, and above all the safety of the tablet. For this, I have first researched technology and materials, and decided on magnetic technology to secure the tablet case to the bag, and neoprene to ensure resistance and anti-shock properties of the bag. Magnets are more secure than straps that are usually used on bags for tablets. They are also more discreet, and enable to develop a very minimalistic, slim design. With this basis, we have developed and used prototypes in daily life during several months to work on the position of the magnets and folds within the bag, and to set up the most useful viewing positions and angles, based on the users input (engineer and a few friends acting as test subjects). This test period also enabled to confirm that magnets do not interfere in any way with the wireless connectivity of the tablet. After the basic design and technology were confirmed, based on user input we have focused on the details of the design. To complete the bag functionality we have added in front and on the back side different functional pockets to transport at the same time smartphone, stylus, passport, cash, usb key and others little accessories with a maximum of safety, and thus potentially eliminate entirely the need of any other wallet or a bag. We have reviewed and slimed down the bag, focusing on and cutting down its weight thanks to modification of the magnets positions and weight, with one goal in mind : "traveling light". Finally, in a last step we have decided on a range of color combinations for this product, matching with the current trends towards color use.
The challenge of this bag is to combine convenience of use, safety of the device, and a global design that respect and reflect the tablets design and spirit, along the lines of "convenient/modern/ elegant/ minimalistic/ fun & striking". We have first researched technology and materials to be used - eliminating usual straps for lack of trust in their safety, lack of elegance and simplicity of use. Magnets, which are both extremely secure and completely unobstructive, enabling a change of position of the tablet in one simple movement, have been the answer. Neoprene as a material ensure resistance, anti-shock properties and potentially a large array of colors. The second challenge has been to slim down the initial bag design in weight, shape and cost. For this we had to decrease the initial number of pockets and reposition them to perfect functionality. Working with the producing factory, we have also decreased and modified the numbers and position of the magnets used. We have thus slimed down the bag and its production cost. Finally, we have down played the initial design, retaining contrast of punchy colors and pure black, to match with current color trends while retaining the simplicity of tablets design.
