| DESIGN NAME: Black Shadow H-E Concept PRIMARY FUNCTION: Hydrogen-Electric Hybrid Motorcycle INSPIRATION: Reminiscent of vintage splendour when leather jacket clad riders raced precariously from café to café, to prove themselves, the inspiration for this project comes primarily from the simple rugged design of these motorbikes. In fitting with society's ecological ideals, further inspiration was borne from hybrid technology, increasingly prevalent in car manufacturing. I therefore wanted to build a modern, more environmentally friendly bike that drew on the simplistic beauty of vintage styling. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Combining old styling with new and future technology, the motorcycle maximises the use of a range of materials. Using a hydrogen-electric system, stored in conventional engine casing, emits only hydrogen and oxygen from the exhaust. A further unique feature is the use of a carbon titanium composite for the frame, creating a lightweight ecological bike that is classically beautiful. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The motorcycle engine runs on a traditional alternator to keep the battery charged, whilst offering a hydrogen powered combustion engine, which, when combined with air powers the electric motor, further powering the wheels and emitting water. As a hybrid, the electrical element of the engine compensates power, and is now increasingly being used to power larger vehicles such as cars. In this manner, the engine will have sufficient power to reach speeds in excess of 100 mph. PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: My inspiration has been drawn over the years of admiring classic motorcycles as a hobby from a young age. During the first quarter of 2013 I decided to start sketching out what would I like as the perfect bike and what could be done to push technology for motorcycles. As the project progressed I began sharing my thoughts with my peers and attending shows and meets to get as many opinions as possible to further refine the design, whilst researching current and future technologies and processes. PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Using an autoclave, the carbon titanium frame echoes aerospace manufacturing. Hand beaten aluminium provides an artisan like quality to the tank and seat. Adhering to classical design tenets, the upholstery is made from leather. Conventional wiring, brakes and suspension give stability and reliability to an innovative design, derived from the traditional racing components as manufactured by Brenbo and Ohlins. With the aim of producing a lightweight bike, bolts and nuts are titanium. SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: 1440mm long by 840mm height Power: 80-110ps Range: 150-180 miles Weight: 175kg (Dry) Materials: Aircraft grade aluminium for the tank and seat Carbon-Titanium composite for frame Titanium for exhaust system Leather for upholstered seat Brakes by Brembo Suspension by Ohlins TAGS: cafe, racer, black, shadow, motor, bike, cycle, hybrid, motorcycle, retro RESEARCH ABSTRACT: My research established the scope for incorporating a hybrid engine into a motorcycle whilst investigating styling and modern materials. I researched the internet, used contacts and attended meets to establish the project scope. I discovered a hitherto silent market for environmentally friendly motorcycles, however small. The project could give the hybrid engine better visibility being a channel for research by fuel companies. CHALLENGE: A key challenge to the project was the historical perspective of Motorcycle design and the tradition of fast, powerful and aggressive styling against the environmentally friendly aim of the project. The social perspective offered challenge linked to the hybrid engine due to the innovative technology it utilises. A further challenge was gathering specific information on the hybrid engine, which is still in its pilot stages of production, the infrastructure for hydrogen based engines is limited. NAME: Mark Norton Menendez PROFILE: As a young Yacht Designer, Mark's main goal is to achieve innovation through the use of both classic and modern styling, alongside cutting-edge technology and manufacturing. Having studied Yacht Design at Coventry School of Art and Design, Mark has worked as an Interior / Exterior yacht designer in England, Italy and the Netherlands since graduating in 2010. With a portfolio of both luxury and semi-production yachts, Mark considers luxury and practicality, whilst meeting and exceeding the clients expectations, having designed entire interiors for Sunseeker, from 40ft to over 100ft, through to exteriors and interiors for 50m-142m yachts for international clients and shipyards around the world, with many of them now in build. |
