DESIGN NAME: Dimdim
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Cradle, rocking chairs
INSPIRATION: I made this cradle for my godchild.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: I created this one of a kind multi-functional solution that serves as a rocking chair and also as cradle when two Dimdim chairs are joined together. Each of the rocking chair is made up of wood with steel supports and finished in a walnut veneer. Two chairs can be mounted to each other with the help two hidden clamps below the seat to form a baby cradle.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Dimdim is a cradle that also includes two rocking chairs.
The chairs are attached to each other by two hidden clamps underneath the seat. The legs can be rotated a quarter, depending on the use as a rocking chair or cradle.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: I started with drawing the sketches in November 2012 in Milan, where I was on a erasmus exchange project. And I finished the design in June 2013 in Mechelen, where I live.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: For my research I talked to parents of different ages. I inquired of what cradles they used, what happened with the cradle after the use of the baby. Turned out the cradles where dumped on the attic or in a thrift shop. The best solution was to pass it on to family or friends. But in non of the cases the cradle stayed inside the household. So I thought of a solution where the cradle can stay with the family or even with the baby itself. The baby, child, teenager can keep his cradle/chairs his whole life.
CHALLENGE: The difficult part was to made the prototype with out the help of any companies. To bend the wood and finish it of with walnut veneer. Also to find a way for turning the legs when the function changes.
