DESIGN NAME: Ripple Applique
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Applique
INSPIRATION: The project is inspired by raindrops when steadily observed and how they propagate and contrive a sequence of circular forms from the moment they fall from the sky down to when they marry with water. This pluvial process is the substructure of the design concept formation for the ripple applique.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Ripple applique is a lighting unit that can be designed using either brass, copper or metal. These materials are then hammered and cut into rings which are then placed above one another to recreate the pattern of a water ripple. The layering structure is designed to disperse light in an artistic and visually appealing way.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The beauty of this applique is the flexibility it offers to a space. It could be hung on either a ceiling or a wall, in clusters or independently to suit the mood and style of the room. The indirect dimming light that is supplied generates warmth, intimacy and harmony making it a pleasant addition to a mood.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in 2008 in Egypt and was specially designed for the Italian restaurant at The Cove –Rotana Resort & spa, Ras Al Khaimah –UAE. Later in 2011 it was reintroduced in Mahally; a local showroom for furniture and accessories in Egypt, with different colors and diameters.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The applique can be made out of either brass, copper or metal sheets that are cut into rings and are individually hammered. The rings were welded together with copper rods to create the required space in between the coalescence of rings. The technology is mainly organic, to preserve randomness of the hammering and the lines of the circles.
This applique has been hand constructed by master craftsmen in Egypt using simple tools and produced in medium sized workshops.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: The largest circle which is the outer diameter is 60 cm and can be custom made to a minimum of 2 rings or an endless amount of rings. The shape could also be half of the ripple or a quarter of the ripple. The metal ripple could also be sprayed using any color from electrostatic paints that one desires.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The radius effect
The most recognized water pattern is the ripple effect which is the incremental circular form that appears around any object penetrating through a layer of water. This undulation forms on the surface drawing outward circles in different tones and volumes illustrating what we call ripples.
The hammer effect
The impact of water droplets on a wet surface are as the piercing of a hammer to a metal sheet. Despite the softness of water, the particles created by a cloudburst spawns an organic circular form building momentum as it falls.
CHALLENGE: When creating a design, the challenge is divided into parts. Firstly, it must serve its main purpose, so in this case the lighting effect was the main concern. Secondly, its function is important which is its flexibility in any space it is placed. Thirdly, the quality of the production must be flawless in its context.
