| DESIGN NAME: Raw PRIMARY FUNCTION: Clock INSPIRATION: For a time I was exploring natural materials like wood, leather, natural fibers to integrate into my design work. This is somehow related to my personal philosophy of going back to the roots, nature, self-sufficiency, being independent, and producing my own products. It is very important to note that this product was conceived during the economic recession of 2009, and seeking refuge in nature and natural processes by using honest materials have been very helpful to me as a designer. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Raw is a hanging clock that highlights the natural beauty of wood - its texture, color nuances, (im)perfections. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The hanging function is what sets this clock apart from other clocks. Most wall clocks have mounting keyholes at the back, and sometimes it is difficult to mount them on the wall because you can't see the hole. That means the user needs to try several times in order to mount the clock on the wall, using trial and error. This could be a minor annoyance especially when changing batteries. The leather strap solves that issue, however minor it may be. In the end the Raw clock proposes a new way of displaying time. PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project was initiated around June 2009, and the prototype was exhibited at the New York International Gift Fair in August 2009. PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Fabricated using a CNC-milling machine and completed with hand-cut leather. The combination of nature, craft, and industrial technology is inherent in my designs.
