DESIGN NAME: Urbanoids
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Floor Lamp
INSPIRATION: Exploring the wood lamination technique we were aiming to rejuvenate organic forms inspired of natural patterns. Applying the shapes to the materials we were led to imprint the controversial state of consciousness for natural awareness. The time is insignificant since that represents a circle of events and choices. Nature "wooden block" stands uninfected from the human’s violent interference "aluminum plate". On top, at one side is visualized how distant from nature people are day after day, while at the other side is represented the need for friendly environmental cohabitation.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: This floor lamp is a combination of organic and linear forms, natural and industrial materials, cold and warm light sources, aiming to project an alternative way of creating a product away from the current state of mass production and soulless objects, which gives to the piece an aesthetic balance as well as a unique identity. The object is mainly handcrafted and can be reproduced in limited number.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The object can also be used as a room separator
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in May 2008 in Athens and finished in October 2009 in Athens
FITS BEST INTO CATEGORY: Lighting Products and Fixtures Design

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The main body of the object has been constructed of fifty-one pairs of plywood strips formed with cascamite by hand with the use of MDF molds, while the rest of the elements are made of aluminum with industrial methods.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: It is a floor lamp and it can also function as a room separator. The dimensions of the object are 2800mm x 250mm x 1800mm. Seven spot lights are placed at the bottom of each aluminum square tube.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The research has been conducted via two parallel paths. Experimentation of wood lamination technique and a thorough visual research for natural patterns. It was developing part by part. The patterns that have been found in nature became real through the experimentation and vice versa. The industrial elements, have been added to the project to visualize the human's interference as well as the current city's status.
