| DESIGN NAME: Bird&berry Collection PRIMARY FUNCTION: Baby Furniture INSPIRATION: The image of children's room emerged when we as parents observed how our children began to crawl, tried to stand up, and then took their first steps. The child gave a signal, as parents we understood it and later acted on it as professionals. We found it fascinating right from the beginning-watching each piece of furniture develop starting from the many sketches and become a real product, after many prototypes and hard work. And with each step we came closer to real bird&berry collection. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: With the collection we tried to find a balance between the parents and the childs understanding of aesthetics. It combines simple elegance with functionality. Sloped lines are a reminder that nature doesn't think in straight lines thus evoking curiosity and imagination of little ones, to think outside the box and to promote the child to become in to an independent person. Child oriented and safe design is characteristic to all the range. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Most of the collection's pieces are suitable for a long time. For example crib transforms into a toddler bed by simply removing the front rail and attaching the safety boards. Also the dresser later serves as a chest of drawers. PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in January 2011 in Riga, Latvia. Since then the collection was awarded with several National Design Awards. Latvian Design Society Annual Design Award 2011 Grand Prix and Best manufactured product for the bird&berry collection, Leading Latvian design magazine DEKO Design Award 2012, 2. prize. International fairs Kind und Jugend 2011, Cologne Baltic Furniture Fair 2011, Riga, Latvia Stockholm Furniture and Lights fair 2012 Kind und Jugend 2012, Cologne National Buyers Show 2012, Sydney. |
PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The furniture manufacturing requires machine work as all the details should be precise as well as craftsmen work to get the final touch. Basic material is Baltic birch plywood, cut with CNC and treated with water based finishes, suitable for children. SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: The collection is suitable from birth and all the dimensions were were adjusted taking into account ergonomics and standards. TAGS: KUKUU, bird&berry, design baby furniture, modern nursery, design kids furniture, eco conscious baby furniture RESEARCH ABSTRACT: We are focusing on childs needs and the detail while crating every piece of furniture. Furniture made with love and attitude becomes something more than just a thing. They carry a story with them, the story of care, the story of a love what you do. The bird&berry collection is created to be used, loved, and passed on. We believe that people are conscious of our throwaway culture, that they are looking for something real, well designed and long lasting. CHALLENGE: The hardest part was adapting the furniture for serial product as from the beginning it was made for our own children.
