| DESIGN NAME: d:note PRIMARY FUNCTION: Seating Adjacent to The Grand Piano INSPIRATION: We were given the task of relocating a former client to a new space. The new location was considerably smaller but still needed to house all of the original furnishings which included a baby grand piano. We also needed additional seating for entertainment purposes. Our goal was to add comfortable seating that complimented the piano without crowding the space. We drew inspiration from the curve of the piano and the fact that people are quick to gather around it, whether it is being played or not. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: d:note follows the contour of a grand or baby grand piano and includes a side-table to rest a drink while listening to music. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Individuals seem naturally drawn to the piano and pianist while playing. d:note offers the opportunity for a more intimate seating group near the piano. The sloping separation mimics the curves of the piano and creates two seats. It also makes it possible to incorporate a small side table. PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started January 2009 in Chicago and a second installation was made in California September 2011. FITS BEST INTO CATEGORY: Furniture Design |
