DESIGN NAME: Disco-Volante
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Coffee Table
INSPIRATION: The form of the Disco-Volante is loosely based on lily pads.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The pods of the Disco-Volante are in different colours, heights and sizes. The use of coloured translucent plastic produces coloured shadows.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The multi-level design allows people to interact with the table differently to how they would interact with a normal coffee table. A person could place an item not regularly used, like a book on a lower pod while placing a drink on one of the higher pods.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in August 2009 in Melbourne and finished in August 2011 in Melbourne, and was exhibited in DesignEX in 2012.
FITS BEST INTO CATEGORY: Furniture Design

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The Prototype table is made from polished aluminium and acrylic.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: 733 x 1500 x 403
TAGS: Coffee table, Aluminium, Acrylic, Colourful
RESEARCH ABSTRACT: When researching for this design I noted that a number of items placed on coffee tables have small footprints i.e, glassware, TV remote controls, books and magazines. This allowed me to design a table with a number of small pods without losing any usability.
