DESIGN NAME: The Origami Rose
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Multifunctional Table
INSPIRATION: The unpredictable nature of using interlocking planes on interior objects.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Given the limited space in urban living, city dwellers often find themselves in need of furniture pieces that can serve multiple purposes. Using interlocking techniques and varying plane heights, the Origami Rose serves three different functions: 1) a side table/bedside table; 2) a desk; and 3) a book shelf. The opening at the center is meant for a floor lamp to provide illumination.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The table was constructed using one sheet of 4 feet by 8 feet plywood (3/4” thick). The plywood was cut by a CNC machine based on my cutsheet. After receiving the cut pieces, I sanded down each piece and applied three layers of Tung oil on each piece. The pieces were then finished with a layer of pastewax. The assembly of the table relied only on the use of joinery and glue. There was no hardware involved in the assembly.
