DESIGN NAME: Modular wine rack Nucleus
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Modular Wine Rack
INSPIRATION: Inspired by the designer's personal need for a wine rack design that is of high quality, contemporary, sleek and minimal, interactive, eye-catching but subtile, playful, and infinitely expandable by compact modules for high flexibility in limited spaces. A new design should also be able to hold slightly bigger sized bottles like Champagne bottles. Coloured elements encourage owners to be even more interactive so they can create refreshing new sculptures time and time again.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Modular wine rack Nucleus consists of flat elements of extruded aluminium. Each element is identical in shape, has a brushed finish and is anodized in blank or color. It is assembled by sliding elements together. Modular features at the elements' edges make the wine rack infinitely expandable with endless combination options. Rubber strips protect the floor and the elements at the bottom. Assemblies can either be free-standing or wall mounted through special adapters.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Slide the elements together and create your personal favorite setup. Press rubber strips on the bottom elements and it is ready for use. You can choose to let it be an artful eye-catcher by creating a spectacular sculpture, or just a subtle storage rack that fits in a limited space. When your wine collection grows, you can change the entire shape or expand it with new elements. Wall-mounted versions need special adapters in approximately 25 percent of its cells.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The company is founded in Aug 2010. It took roughly 2 years to achieve an acceptable result by improving extrusion dies, tolerances, anodizing methods, etcetera. However, quality improvement is still in progress. Modular wine rack Nucleus is only available in our own web shop since april 2012. Coloured elements will become available during 2013. Our head office is in the city centre of Arnhem, NL. Our production facility, storage and distribution is in Bemmel, a small town near Arnhem.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Aluminium profiles are extruded in 6 meter lengths through our specifically designed die. This process is outsourced. In our workshop these profiles are lightly machine-brushed. Then, 6 profiles at once are CNC-milled to pieces with a length of exactly 260 mm, in 24 pieces per cycle. CNC-milling is used to get smooth and straight end faces. The elements are sent to an anodizing factory. Upon return, a thorough QC check is done and all parts are packaged in boxes.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Length of each element: 260 mm.
Length of each rubber strip: 220 mm.
Maximum bottle diameter: 90 mm.
Colors: Blank, Blue, Orange (and more colors in the future).
Available sets and sizes: Single elements in various colours, Standard sets (16 elements for 6 bottles) in satin, blue and orange. Every set contains sufficient rubber floor protection strips.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The type of bottles that had to fit in my wine rack-to-be, were the slightly bigger sized type of wine bottles and champagne bottles. A space of 92 millimeters was enough in this case. So the only research I had to do was to measure the diameter of the biggest bottle I wanted to fit in the rack.
CHALLENGE: In regard to the anodizing process, it was a challenge to find the perfect balance between surface finish quality and fitting tolerance of the interlocking parts. It was also a challenge to find a way to leave as few visible anodizing jig marks as possible, as there are no invisible surfaces incorporated in the elements' design to clamp these so-called jigs to.
