DESIGN NAME:
Humming Bird
PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Salad Dressing Set
INSPIRATION:
Inspired by ongoing studies of natural forms and recent work with laboratory equipment I saw the opportunity to combine the precise nature of the scientific devices with a more decorative and sculptural form that would deliver both function and pleasing aesthetics.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
These dispensers are designed to be a highly decorative table feature. The oil and vinegar is dispensed using the bird form pipettes which operate in the same way as scientific instruments, drawing up accurate amounts of liquid for a more precise and delicate application.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
The form of the product makes a visually interesting table feature. The construction utilizes existing technologies and high quality materials. The ergonomics and materials make the grinder pleasing to handle. The design has deliberately references the natural world and employs unexpected methodology from the science lab to collect and dispense the liquid.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:
The design concept was started in March and completed in June 2012 designed specifically for exhibition and competition.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY:
Base section and stand in stainless steel. Blown glass bulbs for the containers and pipettes.
Clear polycarbonate hangers attached to bulbs with epoxy resin. Injection moulded coloured silicon body pods on pipettes.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES:
Overall size of the unit is width200mm x 200mm x height 300mm. Glass bulb containers hold 200ml of oil or vinegar. Secured in a printed carton board box with recyclable packaging holding and protecting internal contents.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
The development of the design relied upon the use of primary investigation through models which tested the ergonomics and anthropometrics, the optimum size for the bulb containers and pipettes .
CHALLENGE:
The main challenges in this project were to design something that was visually unique, that was easy to handle and operate and which dispensed the liquids efficiently with no residual mess.
