DESIGN NAME: Aeonia
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Osmosis-Inspired Multi Sided Sofa With Tables
INSPIRATION: ...water droplets...and osmosis fueled the thought process for this design. The perfect patterns, proportions, and reactions inherent in nature influenced this work.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The basic design is easily customized to meet the needs of many rooms. The length may be modified as well as the relationship between the two sofa elements. Additional seating elements may be fused into this basic form to create three sided or four sided sofas or settees for either private or commercial use as featured in our Osmosis line of seating. The frame is specified to be made of reclaimed and recycled materials, all adhesives and finishes are low to no-VOC. Seat cushions are foam topped with down for added comfort. The seat backs are also cushioned but kept tight in order to conform to and enhance the lines of the sofa.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: A recurring challenge on our projects had been providing abundant seating without over burdening a space with furniture. For aeonia, our goal was to design a dynamic well proportioned piece that would facilitate large parties and smaller gatherings alike. During design development, scale was very important, equally important was comfort. Lower backs enhance socialization, its curves allow for smooth flow of traffic and makes the sofa inviting and comfortable. Built in tables, both on the sides and on the top of the frame, offer a convenient place to set a drink.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: In August of 2011, the first aeonia was delivered to a Beverly Hills home in California for a creative film producer and functions as planned. We hope its duration is eternal, as its name suggests.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: This design developed out of our desire to create a comfortable sofa that maintains a clean and minimal profile. Ergonomic design calculations were used in order to provide optimal seat height, depth, back pitch, and overall height. During production, we tested the sofa cushions repeatedly using a variety of thicknesses and densities.
CHALLENGE: The most difficult part of this design activity was making the Aeonia comfortable for a variety of users. Ergonomic design calculations were used to provide optimal dimensions for use, however, the firmness of the seats and backs and the upholstering were also key factors in making this a successful design for our end users.
