DESIGN NAME: Room Hub
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Occasional table and storage unit
INSPIRATION: Inspired by the changing needs of a new generation living independently.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: This furniture reflects the lifestyle and changing interests of a generation living in their first home. It is designed to make a contemporary room statement but with the flexibility for the user to personalise a range of function options to suit their individual needs and preferences. The modular nature of the components allows the user to change and adapt the unit extending its potential lifespan.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The transparent material used for the structure of the product reduces the visual bulk of the unit in a room. It is assembled from a flat pack of pre-cut panels which simply slot together creating a grid of cells of different sizes. Simple line bent modules can then be purchased for a wide range of uses such as gadget tidies, magazine, DVD/Game and CD storage, bottle holders and flower vases. A range of decorative surface ‘mats’ with TEP grids that help attach them to the unit top improves its table function. As different needs arise or user tastes change modules and mats can be changed or added.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The design concept was started in March and completed in September 2011.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Tinted transparent polycarbonate panels are laser cut for dry slot jointing. Polycarbonate was chosen for scratch resistant lightweight properties. Alternative laminate panels may be used according to preference. Modules are in acrylic using simple line bent construction that minimises production cost. Surface mats are laser cut with a TEP grid applied to their underside.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Overall size of the unit is width950mm x length 1250mm x height 400mm. Thickness of polycarbonate panels is 12mm. Acrylic mats overall size is 310mm x 280mm x 8mm. Modules are made from 6mm Acrylic. Product is designed to flat pack into a single heavy duty carton board package

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Surveys of first time buyer/newly independent age group show them owning and using a wide range of ‘gadgets’ and remote controls. They spend time watching DVDs and playing video games and are likely to renew and replace belongings on a regular basis. They have an experimental attitude to their furniture. Items linked to lifestyle are important to them and organising and keeping these safe is an issue. They like self assembly furniture and contemporary materials and styling. Size is affected by the variety of storage needed, ergonomics and the constraints of average room sizes.
CHALLENGE: The main challenges in this project were firstly to design something that could adapt to the changing needs and tastes of the user, and that responded to the interests and lifestyles of the target demographic; secondly the material choice was important as the unit would inevitably have a strong visual presence in a room. Lastly the design had to suit self assembly, be straight forward and uncomplicated to put together.
