DESIGN NAME: Barramundi BBQ
PRIMARY FUNCTION: BBQ designed for wood fires
INSPIRATION: My love affair with a perfectly bbq'ed steak
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Extremely compact fully dismantlable design for smallest stored footprint and mobility.
Shown in the main image with a firebown and base, the Barramundi design is specifically independant of the fire container.
Plates designed for optimum performance over wood fires but can be used over any heat source.
Plates can be interchanged and reversed and removed (with cooked food) and used as a warmplate to keep food warm.
Assembly relies only on interlocking of the individual parts and gravity.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: This product is designed to make cooking over wood fires easy and successful every time.
It uses thick steel cook plates to achieve a controllable and uniform cooking temperature.
Apart from achieving this, the entire product is designed to be very easy to assemble, used and disassemble and then have the smallest possible stored footprint.
The design avoids any small parts or weak breakpoints and is intended for extreme long life and high durability.
Assembly and disassemble takes under 1 minute and is simply a slot together operation. The entire product dismantles to its basic individual elements for storage.
Plates are also interchangeable and removable. Plates can be removed while hot and used on serving table to keep food warm. This interchangability permits multiple plates to be used and extend the capacity of the barbecue.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: First sketches dec 2009,
First prototypes Jan 2010
First series April 2010

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The idea came to me from a dismayed feeling that BBQ technology was primarily focused on larger and more feature packed products. Also the trend of using non-traditional heat sources such as gas and electricity departing completely from the essence of what BBQ was all about to me.
So the design of a extremely simple yet well performing BBQ, (with additional hidden features) with only 7 pieces of steel which simply interlock to assemble was that main challenge.
CHALLENGE: With the myriad of different BBQs in the market, I felt that many designs ignore the aesthetic purpose of the BBQ
With the BBQ either remaining in your garden or stored away with not in use, the BBQ must either look good or be easy and compact to store.
As a purist with BBQing, the only fuel is wood.
The converging goals were to; create a BBQ that looked cool AND stored away easily, Virtually self assembled, Cooks easily and predicable with wood, and could cook for up to 8 people.
