DESIGN NAME: Urchin
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Table Cruet/Condiment Set
INSPIRATION: Study and investigation of natural forms
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: This design bridges a gap between fine dining and casual situations. It is inspired by natural forms in particular by Urchins and Corals. The polymer body shells allow strong colours to be employed and resist the corrosive effects of the contents. The size is practical for domestic use whilst being ergonomically functional to hold and the assembly allows for easy batch production. It brings colour and a talking point to dinner parties where it becomes a 'table sculpture' as well as functional object. The materials and appearance make it suitable for an informal gathering of friends.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Each part of the cruet functions independantly with visual impact being as important as function. The Mustard Pot polyamide shell is in two halves allowing access to the liner and the spoon screws through the cap section into the top spine. The central top spine of the salt and pepper are hollow and larger being pierced to allow passage of the condiment. Spines are arranged in 3 spirals that wrap around the shell forming a tripod base that lifts the product from the table surface.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project was begun in October 2010 and concept designs were completed in April 2011.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The product comprizes injection moulded polyamide shells with 18/10 stainless steel spines with an option for injection moulded polymer spines which are chromed. The shells are overmoulded with a soft touch silicon finish and are pierced to allow the spines to be a snap fit.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: I collected data from a sample group who saw informal dinner parties as a preferred way to get together with friends. The focus group stated that utensils and ornament was important to these occasions and owned a range of products known for their visual impact as well as their function. They held dinner parties of up to 8 people and this with visual presence influenced the size of the individual pieces. The product ranges owned by the group suggested a choice of materials and foam models were produced to test the ergonomics of the designs.
CHALLENGE: Well respected technologies were deliberately chosen to ensure that the product could be put into production. The main challenges were firstly visual in achieving a balance between the contemporary and sophisticated which was achieved through good feedback with the focus group. Secondly the ergonomic challenge which affected the selection of materials, size and position and number of spines. Thirdly the assembly of the components which 'plug' together ensuring a secure and stable outcome.
