DESIGN NAME: Leon Megé La Petite Collection
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Necklace
INSPIRATION: A customer who was working for an international charitable organization couldn't wear her ring daily due to perils of travel to remote locations. She wanted to keep the memory of her fiancé close to her at all times.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: La Petite is an unprecedented collection of pendants/charms designed to look like miniature engagement rings. They are 10 mm in diameter and made with the same quality and precision as actual sized rings, using platinum, diamonds and natural gemstones. Some of La Petites feature micro pave and all are presented in unique combinations of gem colors and cuts. They are intended to be collectible and come with a Certificate of Authenticity as well as an edition number.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The rings can be worn as a necklace, pendant or charm. They can be worn individually or collectively on any chain of choice, around the neck or on a bracelet. They are exact miniature copies of full size rings we make for our customers.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: From the concept to actual completion the project took 2 years. The project was completed in New York City and finished in December, 2010. It was announced on our web site and we had a great response. many original pieces were immediately sold.
FITS BEST INTO CATEGORY: Fashion, Apparel and Garment Design

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Platinum, yellow and pink gold, colored and white diamonds, colored gemstones.
Completely handmade (without using CAD/CAM) with featuring micro pave settings and diamonds of varying shapes, colors, and sizes. Created with traditional jeweler's tools and set under a microscope.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Each charm is 10 mm in diameter. Center stone sizes vary between 0.25 carats and 0.80 carats. The width of the shank of each ring is less than 1 mm. The inner diameter is calculated to be too small for a baby's finger, so people are not tempted to use them as actual rings. We don't want a baby to swallow one.
TAGS: pendant, charm, necklace, engagement ring, tiny rings, diamonds, platinum
RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Our research indicated that nobody ever created such a collection. Small scale charms were produced in the past but not with such precision and consistency and craftsmanship. Nobody ever marketed similar product. Nobody ever produced them in platinum, using finest diamonds and gemstones. The research was done using online tools and searches.
CHALLENGE: Handmade engagement rings featuring micro pave settings are a difficult task in itself. When the rings are so small it makes the task of precision and quality to ensure integrity of the design ever more difficult. Each ring consists of 10-20 individual parts that must be made and assembled using microscopes. Setting the stone in such a small mounting require a steady hand, extreme caution and attention to detail. Another challenge is molding the consumer's opinion of the true value of a miniature ring.

Workshop to remember
Twenty feet high vaulted ceiling hand plastered with a floral pattern by an unknown English mason, dark oak paneling dating from 1912, enormous Gothic fireplace to keep warmth on a chilly November evening, cathedral style windows basking the shop with a warm light, Tuscan style deck to take a break from the grinding routine work - all of it serves as an inspirational backdrop for the reclusive artist, Leon Megé.
